Job Description

To lead and continue to develop the Corporate Communications strategy with internal and external audiences. Ensures communication strategies and initiatives remain aligned with the organization's long-term objectives to enhance and protect the company's reputation and brand. Use expert knowledge and extensive experience to implement and oversee all communications projects and strategic initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

Accountable for the development and implementation of an overall corporate communications strategy for both internal and external audiences
  • Requires a broad understanding of multiples disciplines with in the mining industry and applies this knowledge to drive business results
  • Initiates and proactively nurtures relationships with key journalists and opinion leaders; acts as key contact to media and as company spokesperson as needed
  • Accountable for ensuring that Kinross' strategy, operational developments and financial results are communicated effectively both internally and to external stakeholders
  • Accountable for writing and developing corporate news releases, including quarterly disclosure requirements, and other company communication materials
  • Oversees corporate website and other digital and social media platforms for the company
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams and other senior management, and considers the business impact of decisions on diverse groups; influences others to achieve project goals, often without direct authority
  • Provides strategic support to the senior leadership team on media relations
  • Provides strategic communications for global issues management and crisis communications
  • Oversees the preparation of the company disclosures such as the annual report, and provides support for the preparation of the management information circular and sustainability reports.
  • Provides strategic communication support for internal company-wide initiatives and employee announcements and events
  • Acts as an ambassador for continuous improvement within communications; introduces new methodologies and tools to improve current practices
  • Identifies the need for and develops company-wide standards, procedures, and policies and ensures compliance with industry and professional regulations
  • Ensures all projects are integrated with other business activities and that regional and functional interests are represented; ensures redundancies across improvement projects are minimized
  • Reviews complex or high-risk plans to minimize risks and to ensure compliance with company and industry regulations
  • Determines training and education needs and facilitates the provision of this learning


To advise the management group on Communications matters
  • Prepares business cases and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
  • Oversees the preparation of executive speeches and presentations
  • Provides strategic communication direction and support to all sites and offices
  • Influences leaders and key stakeholders to buy into change efforts within the Communications department that will result in sustained competitive advantage
  • Provides extensive strategic and logistical support for the development and execution of presentations and documents required for the company's annual general meeting
  • Provides strategic support to multiple internal functions at the global level

To lead and manage a team of communications personnel
  • Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers and minimize risk
  • Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages overall performance of the communications function and direct reports
  • Builds the capabilities of the team to enhance the function's ability to achieve financial and operating strategy; hires appropriately, leverages the talents of the group, and takes corrective action where necessary
  • Ensures there is a comprehensive and effective succession management strategy in place for the function; identifies succession role requirements and high potential talent, and actively develops key talent


Education and Experience

  • University degree in a related field of study
  • Additional specialized education of up to 4 years, including a master's level degree or equivalent, is considered an asset
  • 10 years of direct work experience in communications, with at least 5 years operating at the management level with staff management responsibilities
  • Excellent understanding of public relations, financial statements, capital markets, and investment practices


Additional Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • In-depth understanding of Kinross' processes is a definite asset
  • Previous experience in the mining industry is preferred, or the extractive industry
  • Previous experience managing relations with journalists and opinion leaders
  • Previous experience creating and executing project plans for communications; ability to identify barriers to success and minimize risk
