Great Bear Project

In March, 2022 Kinross acquired Great Bear Resources and its flagship Great Bear project, located near Red Lake, Ontario. The Great Bear property is a greenfield, large-scale deposit with the potential for significant open pit and underground operations. Kinross intends to develop the project according to the following industry-standard sequence:
  • Internal Scoping Study: Current work-in-progress expected to be complete by the end of 2022. The scoping study will determine a development parameter envelope, provide critical inputs for permitting requirements, and will define the scope of work, objectives and screening criteria for the next phase, the Pre-feasibility Study (PFS)
  • PFS: The PFS will be developed during 2023 and will develop a number of different development scenarios. Specific Trade-off-studies will be identified and executed out within some of the scenarios. In the analysis stage the scenarios will be ranked according to economic and risk/reward criteria. Sensitivity analyses will be carried out to examine the robustness of the ranking. The end result of the PFS will be a single, preferred development scenario, and an updated execution timeline, cost estimate and economic model. The PFS will also set the parameters for the next phase, the Feasibility Study (FS)
  • FS: Assuming a favourable outcome from the PFS Kinross will then execute a Feasibility Study, starting in early 2024. The FS will develop the project scope and design so that a detailed execution plan can be developed. A risk evaluation will be carried out, and then the execution plan timeline established. Once the design and execution plan are sufficiently developed, an FS capital cost estimate will be prepared. Mine plans, production plans and operating cost estimates will be developed and optimised. A revised economic model will be prepared and the result offered up to support a GO/NO-GO investment decision.
  • Execution: Assuming a favourable outcome to the FS, and a positive investment decision the Great Bear Project is expected to move into the Execution Phase in 2025 or 2026 with detailed engineering and procurement.

The Project Team and The Position

The Great Bear Project Team will comprise fulltime Kinross employees, supported by engineering companies and consultant technical experts. The Project Team will be led by the VP & Project Director - Great Bear Project.
