The Kinross Corporate Head Office is located in downtown Toronto and supports Kinross' operations and projects worldwide. Corporate functions include Finance, Procurement, Health & Safety, Human Resources, IT, Investor Relations, Exploration, Geology and Mine Planning, among others.

Job Description

  • To provide leadership to, and build and develop a team of professional employees responsible for executing the finance strategy as well as implementing processes and procedures relating to external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure.
  • To act in an advisory role to the broader organization with respect to technical knowledge and expertise in external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure. To review consolidated financial results and lead the external reporting function.
  • To encourage adherence to financial control policies by corporate and regional entities/subsidiaries.
  • To act in an advisory role for non-routine transactions (i.e.: acquisitions, dispositions, financings), projects, and other initiatives. To participate in business and/or project planning by offering technical and cross-functional expertise.


Job Responsibilities

1. To lead the management of external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure
  • Demonstrates advanced level knowledge in external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure for large public companies.
  • Responsible for the interim and annual financial statements, Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), and other reports including financial information that are filed with regulators and published externally.
  • Responsible for ongoing evaluation of complex financial disclosure requirements.
  • Implements best practices for external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure through benchmarking within industry and among public issuers who are leaders in external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure to make recommendations for improvement to senior management.
  • Develops and implements strategies for the external financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure function and ensures strategies are concretely linked to the corporate vision, values, and strategic plan.
  • Develops systems and measures that appropriately assess the performance of the financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure function and reviews progress to ensure achievement of targets; and is accountable for the results.
  • Assists with the formulation and execution of the Company's compliance (Sarbanes-Oxley) program to ensure compliance with securities regulators' requirements.
  • Liaises with external auditors on accounting policy formulation and disclosure alternatives and during interim reviews and annual audits.
  • Liaises with Internal Audit to ensure compliance with the SEC and OSC compliance requirements.
  • Leads technical projects including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, managing resources and delegating tasks.
  • Acts as a change agent for areas related to financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure, including assessing readiness to engage in change efforts; and designing and implementing change strategies.


2. To advise the management group on complex financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure matters
  • Prepares business cases and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders.
  • Reviews best practices and the competitive landscape and recommends continuous improvement efforts in financial reporting and accounting.
  • Researches, benchmarks against Company's peers and provides recommendations to Kinross' senior management on complex accounting and reporting issues; assists regional controllers and corporate accounting staff in resolving local accounting issues upon request.
  • Suggests appropriate improvements and best-in-class practices.

3. To capitalize on advanced knowledge of financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure
  • Acts as an ambassador for continuous improvement within financial reporting, accounting, and disclosure; introduces new methodologies and tools to improve current practices.
  • Identifies the need for and develops company-wide standards, procedures, and policies and ensures compliance with industry and professional regulations.
  • Ensures all projects are integrated with other business activities and that regional and functional interests are represented; ensures redundancies across improvement projects are minimized.
  • Determines training and education needs and facilitates the provision of this learning.
  • Provides input on the drafting of financial disclosures included in prospectuses, management information circulars, regulatory statements, and similar documents filed with securities commissions.
  • Provides accounting solutions and information support to key corporate groups including, but not limited to: Investor Relations, Corporate Development, Treasury, and Corporate Responsibility.

4. To lead or direct various special projects in finance
  • Lead and contribute to analysis in support of M&A activities, including due diligence, preparation of pro forma information, integration, and analysis of accounting and disclosure implications of transactions.
  • Lead and/or contribute to analysis and recommendations on potential financings.
  • Lead and/or contribute to other non-routine projects/transaction work and special initiatives within Finance. This may include work related to external reporting, financial operations, corporate accounting, or other areas of finance.
  • Lead or direct analysis of certain new accounting and disclosure policies prior to adoption, including the following, as appropriate:
    • Analysis of impacts of new standards;
    • Training appropriate personnel on accounting and process changes; and
    • Liaising with departments outside of corporate finance as appropriate.
  • Support the finance team in various activities during quarterly and annual reporting, as needed/appropriate.


In all projects:
  • Demonstrates advanced level knowledge of accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Defines and achieves project goals, anticipates and minimizes risks, addressing barriers and escalates issues appropriately to project sponsors, and in certain cases, manages resources.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, considers business impacts on all functions and locations, and influences others to achieve goals without direct authority. Engages with other functions and with regions to ensure appropriate resources are allocated and inputs made available.


Scope of Responsibility & Complexity

Works under general direction. Work is highly complex and requires professional and industry expertise, business acumen, organizational and economic knowledge. Develops policies and procedures related to financial reporting and ensures direct reports have the knowledge, skills, necessary training, and tools to perform their work effectively. Work is performed with general authority and impacts the results of the accounting, and financial reporting, and may impact the operations and processes in other areas across the organization.

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA or international equivalent)
  • 8 to 10 years of related work experience or equivalent
  • Experience in corporate financial reporting role or similar function
  • Experience leading professionals
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills


Additional Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • Strong knowledge and experience in financial reporting capacity for a large public company
  • Experience in leading non-routine financial analysis and accounting, e.g. financial due diligence, acquisition and divestiture accounting, financing transactions
  • Experience in the analysis and implementation of accounting policies
  • Experience leading projects of varying scope and complexity
  • In-depth knowledge of IFRS, and OSC and SEC Rules and Regulations
  • Excellent management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Ability to work the flexible hours required to meet deadlines
  • Experience in the mining industry is preferred
  • Transaction advisory experience an asset
