The Role:

We are seeking a Senior Engineer Mine Geotechnical for a position on Lihir Island, PNG. Reporting to the Superintendent Mine Geotechnical, the purpose of this role is to minimise the risk of geotechnical hazards (e.g pump and dump slope failure) impacting on production and safety by providing technical expertise relating to the operational and project aspects of the geotechnical section as well as managing a team of technical staff.

To be successful in this role you will also add value by:
  • Identifying and managing geotechnical hazards and associated risks in the open pit, stockpiles, harbour waste platform and marine dumps by capturing and analysing geotechnical drilling, mapping, temperature, slope monitoring data and auditing alarm systems whilst conducting regular inspections and ensuring maintenance activities for slope monitoring equipment is carried out
  • Undertaking slope reconciliation for pit and dump slopes through design, implementation and verification processes
  • Undertaking and project managing geotechnical investigations to provide input into the medium- and long-term design and planning to minimise the risk of geotechnical hazards at Lihir Island
  • Providing strong technical mentoring and guidance for the section and department



Essential criteria:
  • 10+ years' experience in geotechnical management of open pit mines with at least 3 years in a senior position with strong knowledge of managing ground control management programs and geotechnical data collection
  • Experience within technically challenging mines as either a consultant or site-based role
  • Experience with 3D numeric modelling, 2D/3D pore pressure modelling and structural modeling
  • Understanding of the PNG Mine Safety Act and regulations
  • Knowledge of geotechnical slope stability monitoring and analysis software
  • Knowledge of geological/mining modelling software like Minesight/Leapfrog is desirable
  • Cost control and finance knowledge software like SAP is desirable



Qualifications:
  • Tertiary qualified with a Master of Science (Geology) or Engineering (Civil, Mining) is essential
  • Post graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering is desirable
  • Project Management qualification is desirable

Requirements:
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment
  • Must have proof of a completed Police Clearance within the last 6 months
