Globe 24-7 in partnership with Newcrest Mining, is working together to source experienced and qualified talent to join their Marine Maintenance team at their Lihir Gold Operations (LGO) in Papua New Guinea.

The Role
We are seeking an experienced 'hands-on' Fabrication Leading Hand for a FIFO position on Lihir Island, PNG. Reporting to the Supervisor - Mechanical, you will be required to balance day-to-day practical on-the-job tasks with acting as a role model to the marine maintenance team and stepping up into the supervisor position when required for leave coverage. You will safely oversee the fabrication maintenance in this area and ensure that all equipment is correctly maintained to meet necessary production and reliability targets and satisfy customer requirements.

The role will have the responsibility to:
  • Conducts metal fabrication maintenance on the mobile fleet by ensuring a high level of understanding of operational issues including; root cause of failure, repairs, and equipment performance.
  • Provides technical expertise and advice to Supervisor - Mechanical for repair methods and scoping details to support daily maintenance activities and planning processes.
  • Leads and monitors metal fabrication maintenance activities in a hands-on approach
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections on mobile fleet including ocean-going vessels and dewatering infrastructure.
  • Ensures maintenance repairs are compliant with OEM and industry best practice recommendations.
  • Ensures maintenance records for the mobile fleet are kept current.


Essential criteria
  • A minimum level of Grade 10 education.
  • Welding / Fabrication trade qualification or certification.
  • Class 6 PNG Driver's licenses.
  • 3-5 years post trade work experience in large-scale mining operations or heavy industry/shipbuilding facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability in the development of welding repair methods and engineering principals
  • Strong fabrication skills and solution finding abilities
  • Ability to work well under pressure and make sound decisions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously from time to time.
  • High attention to detail with good time management skills.
  • Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building, conflict resolution & training


Desirable criteria
  • Any previous experience or working knowledge of SAP system (highly regarded).
  • Previous experience in delivery and assessment of training materials.
  • EWP, Forklift, and Overhead Crane certification.
  • Computer proficiency MS Office suite.


The Requirements
  • Must be open to FIFO in PNG.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.
  • Must have proof of a completed Police Clearance within the last six months.
