We are seeking a Senior Safety Advisor to join our Health & Safety Team at Red Chris mine for a Fly In Fly Out Fixed-Term opportunity (1 year term). The Senior Safety Advisor is responsible in leading the Safety Team to ensure all work is carried out in a safe, structured, agreed, and timely manner while also maintaining compliance with legal requirements and company objectives by providing support to develop, coach, and mentor team members.

Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Superintendent - Health & Safety, duties will include but are not limited to:

Safety: Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe working environment by:
  • Supporting the Safety Management System ensuring a safety-first work culture
  • Participating in site safety initiatives and support the NewSafe behaviours in the team
  • Ensuring adequate pro-active monitoring to maintain a safe work environment
  • Taking a proactive risk management approach to departmental tasks, i.e., recognise, analyse, respond to ensure risks are at an acceptable level
  • Conduct Visible Felt Leadership interactions, System Verifications and Field Critical Control Checks to target throughout the financial year whilst on site maintaining a safety presence
  • Ensuring standard work procedures and safe systems of work are understood; monitor and report non- compliance
  • Ensuring personnel are adequately trained to safely complete work requirements
  • Attend safety/toolbox meeting and communicate expectations with a focus of continued improvement of the Health and Safety Management System and addressing concerns.

Technical: Demonstrate technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and guiding the team to deliver on departmental goals:
  • Facilitate development and implementation of safety improvement plan
  • Provide specialist OHS advice, assistance and support to all site leaders and personnel.
  • Facilitate and/or consult on incident investigations and analysis using the nominated Newcrest incident investigation system and conduct root cause analysis
  • Development and audit OHS procedures in line with corporate guidance and objectives.
  • Monitor safety performance in all departments and make recommendations to improve safety in a timely manner.

People: Demonstrate the highest professional and ethical standards ensuring all actions are transparent and in accordance with company policy and values by:
  • Working as part of a team; contributing to team outcomes and support to team members
  • Reporting to the Superintendent - Health & Safety with any matters that are unclear or concerns
  • Communicating with the Superintendent - Health & Safety regarding work plans and take responsibility for daily work requirements
  • Liaising with contract partner safety advisors
  • Supporting the safe implementation of NML safety management system and communicates requirements to relevant personnel
  • Provide support and leadership within Safety Advisor, Emergency Response and Occupational Health & Hygiene teams

Planning & Scheduling:
  • Plan and schedule safety advisor roster and key priority work focus areas for each rotation
  • Participate department level business planning and PoaP
  • Communicate the PoaP
  • Planning to a one-month horizon

Qualifications & Experience:

Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years recent, related experience, supplemented by a diploma in occupational health and safety or relevant university degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. You will have a designation or eligibility as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP). We are looking for someone with a solid understanding of safety issues and risks of mining operations, and exploration projects combined with knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, policies, and practices.

In addition to the above, you will have:
  • Considerable experience implementing and supporting safety programs, workplace inspections, audits, and incident investigations
  • Ability to guide supervisory staff on safety matters
  • Strong analytical and research skills and a high degree of integrity and professionalism
  • Sound knowledge and ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations and legislation such as Workers Compensation Act, the WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and Guidelines, and BC Emergency Program Act
