The Water Leads purpose is to oversee water stewardship while managing an interdisciplinary technical team and ensuring the alignment of behaviours, standards and frameworks to the Newcrest Red Chris culture and values. The Water Lead will support The Engineering Management Lead and work closely with the Environmental Lead in the preparation of technical input to the Feasibility Study and permitting documents, and facilitate the interface between water monitoring and modeling consultants and the Project discipline leads (e.g. Infrastructure, Processing, Tailings, Engineering) to satisfy the project requirements.

This is a remote work opportunity based out of our Vancouver office.

Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Engineering Management Lead, the key purpose of this role is to deliver water discipline studies to meet Newcrest standards, ensure that the efficient use of water is included in design decisions, and fulfill the requirements for environmental permitting within our Block Cave Project. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Technical

Demonstrates technical and conceptual excellence in anticipating problems and supports the team and plans to deliver on agreed goals:
  • Act as the Stewart of water resources for the project providing strategic guidance in the use of best practices and challenging proposed design solutions to protect and conserve the water resource available.
  • Provide technical excellence, direction, and problem-solving skills to all designated water modelling studies with specific focus on integration of engineering disciplines
  • Provide technical leadership on issues regarding hydraulic analysis, water balance, groundwater quantity and quality analysis, and water treatment
  • Manage the ongoing surface and groundwater baseline characterization, monitoring and modelling programs, through multiple consultants
  • Manage key studies for optimization of operational and closure water treatment design.
  • Ensure the quality of technical work from contractors and internal sources meets Newcrest's permitting and planning requirements
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of consultant reports
  • Support the Environment Lead in data required to support the Study
  • Prepare summary memos and make presentations to Project and Red Chris site stakeholders (e.g. Project steering committee, Site tailings operations, Project permitting team, etc.) and external stakeholders as required
  • Ensure the Environment Lead, Study Manager and Head of Strategic Studies are kept informed of current and emerging risks relating to water management.
  • Drive continuous improvement with a focus on high technical standards to improve value and mitigate risk
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of consultant reports
  • Support the Environment Lead in data required to support the Study
  • Prepare summary memos and make presentations to Project and Red Chris site stakeholders (e.g. Project steering committee, Site tailings operations, Project permitting team, etc.) and external stakeholders as required
  • Ensure the Environment Lead, Study Manager and Head of Strategic Studies are kept informed of current and emerging risks relating to water management.

  • Stays abreast of emerging safety standards and ensuring alignment with advancements in the industry
  • Ensures all partners, vendors, external parties are fully aware of industry, company and site safety processes and procedures; monitors the safety performance of contractor personnel and generates safety awareness in the contractor workforce.

Scheduling & Planning

Demonstrates commitment to delivering on plans; ensures resources are aligned to plans:
  • Monitors self and technical team achievements against plans
  • Liaises with related stakeholders to support planning and activities
  • Monitors and tracks activities against schedule
  • Adheres to scheduled deliverables; Feasibility Study and project report writing and delivery
  • Develops project presentations as required through project delivery

Budget, Cost & Governance

Contributes to or establishes effective budgeting, forecasting, cost management and analysis processes ensuring compliance with company financial and governance policies, procedures and reporting standards:
  • Ensures the project is delivered on time, as per technical specification and within budget
  • Prepares development and project budgets, and reports on performance and costs
  • Ensures cost management activities do not jeopardize medium- and long-term objectives
  • Ensures spending is consistently monitored to ensure costs are managed within the delegation of authorities and project budgets.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, Civil Engineering, or similar related discipline
  • Post Graduate qualifications in a Civil, Geoscience, or Water related discipline will be highly regarded
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia or ability to transfer registration preferable
  • A minimum of 8-10 years' experience with water treatment & water modelling in mining
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience with large-scale mining operations
  • Strong project management skills developed over at least ten(10) but preferably over (15) years of practical and project experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills: capable of managing interdisciplinary technical team to deliver information to enable project decisions to satisfy key project schedule requirements
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience working with best practices in BC for achieving water quality objectives, including methods for water treatment
  • Effective problem-solving skills with a results-oriented approach
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Prior experience using the Aconex Document Management system considered an asset

The successful candidate will obtain sound engineering knowledge and an applied understanding of related water resource management processes in the mining industry with experience in project management of hydrology, geochemistry, or hydrology projects for mine scale studies including coordination and management of multiple consultants and stakeholders.
