Newcrest Mining Limited, a global mining company and Australia's largest gold producer has recently expanded its footprint into British Columbia as the operator of a Joint Venture company, Newcrest Red Chris Mining Limited. At our Red Chris Mine, we are recruiting a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join the Technical Services team. This position is for work at the remote Red Chris mine located 80 km south of Dease Lake, BC, on the traditional territory of the Tahltan.

The successful applicant will be required to work and stay in camp during their shift rotation. We offer a number of designated flight marshalling points within BC and Calgary AB.

Who we are looking for:

Reporting to the Superintendent - Technical Services, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Accountable for the Surface Ground Control Management Plan with geotechnical input from short term through to the Life of Mine planning cycle
  • Develop the Red Chris mine slope monitoring program, inclusive of implementing stability radar, automated prisms, ground water monitoring, etc.
  • Develop geotechnical hazard management procedures in conjunction with Mine Operations
  • Facilitating the wider effectiveness of the Geotechnical Team and the integration into the Mine Operation and Mine Technical teams
  • Provide geotechnical engineering advice to Mine Planning and Mine Operations
  • Provide geotechnical hazard training to Mine Technical and Operations personnel
  • Supervise geotechnical related contractors
  • Provide guidance to drill and blast engineers to ensure slope stability issues are considered
  • Liaise with geotechnical related consultants
  • Monitor conformance to the open pit design
  • Participate in and drive pit design optimisation
  • Participate in/drive open pit design-based risk assessments

Qualifications and Experience
  • Strong leadership skills, this is a technical leadership role that involves regular communication with Mine Technical, Mine Operations, Projects and Studies, and mine management
  • Minimum 8 years mine geotechnical engineering experience, or similar, preferably in an open pit mine
  • Professional Engineer Designation required and ability to register in province of BC.
  • Tertiary qualifications in either geological, geotechnical, mining, geology or civil engineering disciplines
  • Leadership experience and training
  • Experience with tunnel engineering, soil slope engineering desirable
  • Practical knowledge of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, rock mass rating systems, geotechnical modelling, slope design and ground support design
  • Sound knowledge of basic slope stability analysis techniques
  • Sound knowledge of hazard identification and risk analysis techniques
  • Strong presentation, reporting and data analysis skills
  • Working knowledge of the following is considered an asset: MineSight mining software, Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point and Access, Rock Mechanics numerical modelling software
