Our client, Lihir Gold Limited operates one of the largest gold mines in Papua New Guinea 900kms northeast of Port Moresby on the tropical Niolam Island (Lihir Island). Lihir is a hard rock surface gold operation, ore is refractory and treated using pressure oxidation before the gold is recovered by a conventional leach process.

The Role:

We are seeking a Technical Specialist - Electrical & Instrumentation to provide expertise to support the operations, maintenance, and technical service teams responsible for crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, and gold recovery during regular operations and major plant outages.

Additionally, this role will be required to plan and scope work so that it can be conducted safely; and considers environmental conditions, nearby activities, and the people and other resources needed to complete the work, driving and influencing proactive safety behaviors within workgroups through visible leadership.

Other key accountabilities include:
  • Selecting and sizing instrumentation and valving in accordance with process design criteria managing the instrument tag databases including the revision and allocation of new tags.
  • Ensuring that all instruments and valves are installed and commissioned in accordance with existing site standards and specifications and that any changes to existing plant instrumentation as requested through the work order system are in accordance with the department's change management procedures.
  • Monitor the maintenance activities performed by the national workforce on the Instrumentation and control equipment in the assigned area in line with the maintenance schedule
  • Provides input to the development of a preventative maintenance strategy based on leading industry practices to meet both electrical and instrumentation reliability requirements providing advice on the management and improvement of asset performance
  • Actively seeks cost reduction opportunities.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience essential including 3 years as a supervisor
  • Dual Electrical & Instrumentation trade qualification or certification is essential
  • High Voltage Switching accreditation is desirable
  • SCADA knowledge is advantageous
  • PLC knowledge is advantageous
  • SAP skills are essential

The ideal candidate must have a working knowledge of:
  • Large mining or heavy industrial environment in electrical and instrumentation roles with significant High Voltage Switching and HV power reticulation experience.
  • Reading/interpretation & accurate updating of electrical drawings.
  • Principals associated with the repair, and maintenance of industrial electrical equipment including HV and LV motors, motor control centres, variable speed drives, power distribution, and lighting systems.
  • Australian electrical standards, particularly the AS3000 wiring rules.
  • Basic understanding of formal Project management skills, practices, and methodologies.
  • Thorough understanding of maintenance processes associated with planning and execution of major shutdowns a large processing facilities
  • MS Office suite.

Mobilisation Requirements:
  • This is a FIFO role.
  • Ability to provide/obtain valid police clearance within the last six months.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.
