Our client, Lihir Gold Limited operates one of the largest gold mines in Papua New Guinea 900kms northeast of Port Moresby on the tropical Niolam Island (Lihir Island). Lihir is a hard rock surface gold operation, ore is refractory and treated using pressure oxidation before the gold is recovered by a conventional leach process.

The Role:

We are seeking a Technical Specialist - Mechanical to provide advanced technical maintenance expertise and on-the-job diagnostic support, guidance, and training to the PNG National workgroup.

The role has a primary focus on skills, education, and talent development in support of all planned and unplanned maintenance activities within our on-site Face Shovels, Excavators Blast Hole Drills, and Waste Barge Fleets.

Other key accountabilities include:
  • Attend to breakdowns and diagnose faults in a variety of equipment.
  • Provide on-the-job training when dismantling, removing, and replacing engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms, and hydraulic systems and determining serviceability of parts
  • Contributes to quality control of the fleet by conducting regular equipment pre-release inspections after repair or breakdown, together with heavy equipment fitters.
  • Assist the Supervisor in the direction of team members
  • Plans work so that it can be conducted safely; and considers environmental conditions, nearby activities, and the people and other resources needed to complete the work.
  • Delivers work within approved budget managing any variances in accordance with escalation process.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
  • Trade Certificate in Heavy Equipment Fitting or Heavy Duty Mechanical is essential.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in mobile fleet maintenance in large-scale mining operations (essential)
  • Proven experience in the below is essential:
    • Epiroc and Sandvik Surface Blasthole Drills (D65, PV271 and D55SP) (essential)
    • TEREX RH200 Hydraulic Shovels or Caterpillar 6050
    • Hitachi EX2600 & 1200 Excavators.
    • High level of competency6050sing OEM System Software especially Caterpillar E.T and Cummins Insight
  • Systematic approach to fault finding and a good understanding of hydraulic schematics and particular skills in the diagnosing and repairing Sandvik, Epiroc Blast Hole Drill, and Atlas Copco systems and operations (essential)

The ideal candidate must have a working knowledge of:
  • HEUI fuel systems and diagnostic tools such as VIMS and ET (advantageous)
  • CAT ET and CAT SIS systems
  • Caterpillar engine, transmission, hydraulic, and steering systems.
  • Company-wide and departmental systems including SAP.

Mobilisation Requirements:
  • This is a FIFO role.
  • Ability to provide/obtain valid police clearance within the last six months.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.
