Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering modern leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The Role

Reporting to the Underground Electrical Supervisor, the Underground Communications Technician interacts with predominantly the Mining, Maintenance Services and Projects departments and is responsible for the installation, maintenance and fault finding of the communications infrastructure both underground as well as on the surface at the DBS mining area.

The role is based in Tanami and offers an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth, Darwin, Alice Springs or Brisbane.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Meet maintenance and production objectives by ensuring all maintenance and installation work are carried out to standards.
  • Complete communication infrastructure maintenance or installation task as required by U/G Electrical Supervisor.
  • Provide support to continuous improvement projects within the Maintenance Department.
  • Assist with commissioning and start-up of new installations.
  • Act as a technical reference point and mentor to junior ranked personnel within the department.
  • Implement minor software/ hardware/ graphic interface changes as directed in accordance with site standard, operating procedures, tools and methodologies.
  • Work with supervisors and vendors to develop solutions and seek resolution to complex communications problems.
  • Assist in the development of operational and functional procedures related to systems within own area of responsibility.


The Person

  • Qualifications and significant experience with mining communication hardware and software applications.
  • Knowledge of relevant statutory regulations and standards.
  • Ability to lead work teams (sub-contractors) and apply analytical thinking in problem solving.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously and work under pressure.
  • High level of planning and organisational skills and the ability to carry this out solely or within a team environment.

To be considered for this role, you must be able to meet the site access requirements by having a current driver's license, passing a police clearance and pre-employment medical.
