Dimensions

In this position, you will be responsible for directly supervising the front-line open pit production supervisors as well as the open pit drill/blast supervisors.
You will report to the Open Pit Superintendent. The area of responsibility includes the Hollinger Open Pit as well as the waste rock and ore stockpiles located on the Dome site.
The Open Pit General Foreperson is responsible for medium term management of the pit operations.

Purpose

To oversee all of the medium-term open pit activities and coordinate the planning with geology, engineering, maintenance and milling.
Coordinate mining activities ensuring the work is done safely and efficiently, meeting time schedules, production targets and planned costs.
Develop employees by providing training, guidance, mentoring and succession planning

Essential Duties

Safety and Sustainability
  • Zero Harm focus for all employees, contractors and visitors to the site.
  • Review and sign off on employee 5 point Safety Cards daily.
  • Promote and monitor the utilization of the Safety Management System (Enablon), incident reporting and accident investigations. Ensures timely follow-up of safety action items and implementation of corrective measures.
  • Ensure the open pit operates according to company, federal, provincial and municipal safety and environmental standards.
  • Act/Fill in as the management open pit representative on the JHSC.
  • Ensure that a high standard of housekeeping is maintained in all areas.
  • Partner with contractors to ensure they have the trained personnel, information and motivation to work safely.
  • Coordinate safety and emergency response training.
  • Conduct a Safety Tour of Open Pit monthly and attend all department safety meetings.
  • Practice and promote the Newmont Fatality Risk Management program, conducting monthly targeted Critical Control Verifications.
  • Establish controls to prevent environmental incidents and ensure prompt reporting and cleanup of spills or releases to environment
  • Minimize adverse impacts on community from pit operations.

Managing People
  • Ensure direct reports have the training, knowledge and systems in place to supervise work safely and efficiently.
  • Set objectives, review performance, direct and coach direct reports.
  • Conduct interviews and participate in selection of hourly employees for hire.
  • Co-ordinate with Pit Trainer(s) to ensure the pit's training objectives are being met.
  • Complete direct reports performance evaluations as well as review hourly employee and student evaluations.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to employees as well as discipline as required according to the Employee Improvement Program.
  • Keep department employees informed of safety, production, costs and promote full potential initiatives in those areas.
  • Mentor supervisors for succession planning.

Safe Production
  • Achieve and/or exceed the plan for Production and Cost targets.
  • Maximize operating efficiencies and utilization of equipment in order to achieve benchmarks in Productivity Tables.
  • Continuously improve operating roads, dumps and benches conditions.
  • Implement and complete Full Potential continuous improvement projects.
  • Co-ordinate with maintenance, technical services and mill to develop plans that will meet or exceed budget.
  • Minimize waste of consumables.
  • Minimize damage to equipment.
  • Assist with budgeting and strategic planning.

Training & Experience

  • Minimum grade 12 high school diploma.
  • Minimum 5-10 years open pit mining experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Good working knowledge of all open pit equipment and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of open pit blasting, pattern design.
  • Able to read engineering plans and have a good understanding of ground control.
  • Good computer skills.


Working Conditions

  • This position is located at our Porcupine Mine Site near Timmins, ON.
  • In this role, you will work Monday through Friday. As a result, if you do not live near the mine site, we will require relocation.
