Northern Star (Pogo) LLC have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

  • The Graduate Geotechnical Engineer reports to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer with a primary role of providing assistance to all operations with underground geotechnical requirements to achieve safe and efficient production targets. In addition, there is an expectation to progress through the areas defined under the Graduate Development Program for Geotechnical Engineers.

Duties include:

  • Provide geotechnical support and assistance to the geotechnical and senior engineers
  • Liase with key personnel including Geologists, Surveyors, Engineers, Managers and Operators
  • Review development mining instructions and stope designs and provide recommendations for requirements for safe extractions
  • Assist with geotechnical risk assessments and investigations
  • Measure, monitor and record rock deformations via observations, monitoring equipment and the MDT MPBX extensometer
  • Monitor and assess ground support installation (QAQC) and performance (strain, corrosion) via observations and monitoring equipment
  • Select and prepare samples for further laboratory analysis and maintain database of results
  • Undertake geotechnical analysis utilizing Rock Mass Classification systems, stereonets, failure mode analysis and, if required, numerical modelling
  • Assist with daily, weekly and monthly reporting of mine geotechnical parameters

The specifics:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Engineering Science (Rock Mechanics) or equivalent
  • 0-2 Years of experience in Underground Mining
  • Computer literacy - Microsoft Office, Mine Design Software (eg. Deswik, Vulcan, Datamine, Rocscience Software)
  • Critical thinking skills and problem solving skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
  • Be able to pass a background check and post offer physical.

A Covid Vaccine is required as a condition of employment for all employees hired on or after July 12, 2021.

    • Either one round of Pfizer or Moderna, or the J&J COVID-19 Vaccine is required prior to beginning work for Northern Star (Pogo) LLC. If Pfizer or Moderna, the second vaccine shot will then be needed as scheduled to complete the requirement.
    • Requests for exceptions to this requirement, for reasons such as a candidate's religious beliefs or disability status, will be considered on a case by case basis and determined by the general manager.

The Details:

Working a 15 days on, 13 days off schedule, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
