Northern Star (Pogo) LLC have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

  • The Senior Geotechnical Engineer reports to the Mine Superintendent with a primary role of ensuring that all geotechnical related issues are managed effectively to safely achieve budgeted production targets. The role must ensure that quality standards are met including cost and safety and that geotechnical risks are controlled such that the mine planning and execution can be optimised.

Duties include:

  • Establish and maintain site systems and standards to effectively manage geotechnical risks including procedures, processes and databases.
  • Provide oversight to more junior geotechnical engineers involved in the review of development mining instructions and stope designs
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Company and Statutory requirements
  • Review and update Ground Control Management plan/s (GCMP) regularly
  • Carry out geotechnical evaluations, risk assessments and make geotechnical recommendations to ensure hazards are effectively managed
  • Collect and analyse geotechnical data associated with the identification of potential and actual rockfall events
  • Look for, assess and implement Business Improvement opportunities
  • Engage with site personnel on a regular basis to determine specialist geotechnical requirements
  • Provide support, guidance and professional development opportunities to Geotechnical Engineer/s
  • Support the technical and operations teams with short, medium and long term projects and ensure that all geotechnical risks are considered and managed
  • Build effective communication and networks with the Mining Department
  • Prepare month-end reports documenting key activities/issues occurring in the month and submit to relevant personnel

The specifics:

  • Degree qualified in mining engineering or an equivalent field
  • Specialist qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in the mining industry and a minimum of 2 years at a senior level
  • Sound analytical skills and practical application of geotechnical database management
  • Working knowledge of various mining methods, both surface and underground (e.g. longhole open stoping, air leg stoping, jumbo stoping and underground backfill systems)
  • Exposure to mine auditing and assessment techniques
  • Computer literacy - Microsoft Office, Deswik Design Software, Vulcan, Map3D Numerical Modelling Software, Datamine, Rocscience Software Suite Phase 2 and 3, Dips & Unwedge)
  • Experience in operational projects including scoping, quality and cost management
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • STrong professional writing skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
  • Be able to pass a background check and post offer physical.


A Covid Vaccine is required as a condition of employment for all employees hired on or after July 12, 2021.

    • Either one round of Pfizer or Moderna, or the J&J COVID-19 Vaccine is required prior to beginning work for Northern Star (Pogo) LLC. If Pfizer or Moderna, the second vaccine shot will then be needed as scheduled to complete the requirement.

The Details:

Working a 15 days on, 13 days off schedule, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
