Due to internal transfer, Northern Star (Pogo) LLC have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Senior Mining Engineer at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

The Senior Mining Engineer reports to the Mine Manager, and the primary role is to Manage short-term planning and scheduling of mine development and stoping activities, and supervise mine engineering functions.

Duties include:

  • Develop, communicate, and implement underground mine designs, plans and schedules for Pogo Mine consistent with safe practices, government regulations, and production targets.
  • Develop and execute short to medium term schedules for underground all development, stoping and backfilling activities with iterations, as necessary.
  • Develop and implement short to mid-range mine plans, and strategic project evaluations.
  • Assist with Long-term Mine Planning.
  • Present weekly and monthly production schedules to mine operations and geology departments.
  • Manage and monitor mine utilities networks for dewatering, paste, ventilation and power.
  • Understand and contribute to ventilation, mine utilities, paste backfill, and ground support designs.
  • Perform financial evaluations and cost analyses for operating and capital project justification.
  • Perform mine inspections and monitoring on a regular basis.
  • Develop good working relationships with those on team and other operating groups.
  • Supervise employees, conduct performance evaluations, recommend promotions, and recommend and carry out corrective action for employees.
  • Develop and implement standards and procedures.
  • Identify, communicate, and resolve safety hazards.

What are we looking for?

The specifics:

  • Four to ten years progressively responsible relevant work experience. Prefer minimum 3 years underground mining experience.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Windows environment with experience in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Demonstrated software skills in some specialty software such as Deswick/Vulcan, Minecad, Autocad, VnetPC, EPS, and Qualtrax.
  • Prefer experience and/or training in Deswick, Vulcan or other mine design software package, including schedulers such as Deswik IS. Prefer some hands on experience with mining operations and production.
  • Experience in Long Hole Open Stoping is required, preferably narrow vein with paste backfill.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to assume increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must have good comprehension of safe operating procedures, safety rules, policies, emergency procedures, and MSHA requirements.
  • Must pass a post offer physical and drug test, as well as a background check.

A Covid Vaccine is required as a condition of employment for all employees hired on or after July 12, 2021.

    • Either one round of Pfizer or Moderna, or the J&J COVID-19 Vaccine is required prior to beginning work for Northern Star (Pogo) LLC. If Pfizer or Moderna, the second vaccine shot will then be needed as scheduled to complete the requirement.
    • Requests for exceptions to this requirement, for reasons such as a candidate's religious beliefs or disability status, will be considered on a case by case basis and determined by the general manager.

The Details:

Working a 15 days on, 13 days off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
