Northern Star (Pogo) LLC have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Chief Assayer at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

The Chief Assayer reports to the Metallurgical Superintendent and the role is responsible for managing and optimizing the operational performance of the assay laboratory. This senior position supervises and directs the assayers and technicians and works closely with the metallurgical, mine & geology departments.

Duties include:

  • Responsible for the Assay Laboratory, including but not limited to: Managing and directing daily activities; Optimizing the operational aspects; and Developing, managing, and analyzing the budget.
  • Develop, manage, train, and lead personnel in the preparation of the mine and mill samples prior to fire assay and digestion, fusing and cupelling samples.
  • Conduct studies, research, and develop new analytical product innovations and analytical methods.
  • Prepare solutions, models, and reports.
  • Create and implement standards.
  • Create, implement, and review short-term and long-term plans and projects.
  • Develop and maintain quality control process and practices.
  • Provide expertise, technical support, troubleshoot problems and implement innovative solutions.
  • Provide and evaluate quantitative and qualitative analyses for samples.
  • Ensure all safety related activities are completed in accordance with Company policy such as Hazard ID's, pre-start checks, pre-start meetings, and incident reporting as required.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas.
  • Ensure personnel are adequately trained and qualified in relevant operating procedures.
  • Develop a culture of high performance and behaviours that are consistent with agreed values.

What are we looking for?

The specifics:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Geology or other related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • QA/QC Qualification
  • Minimum of 5-10 years' experience as an Assayer in a gold mine assay lab.
  • Experienced with Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS) preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in bullion fire assay, fusion fire assay, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, XRF, carbon/sulfur analysis, sample preparation, and Microsoft computer systems.
  • Competent at analytical methods used in the Assay Lab.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring of teams
  • Critical thinking skills and problem solving skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
  • Be able to pass a background check and post offer physical.

A Covid Vaccine is required as a condition of employment for all employees hired on or after July 12, 2021.

    • Either one round of Pfizer or Moderna, or the J&J COVID-19 Vaccine is required prior to beginning work for Northern Star (Pogo) LLC. If Pfizer or Moderna, the second vaccine shot will then be needed as scheduled to complete the requirement.

The Details:

Working a 2 week on, 1 week off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
