About your role

We are looking for a Structural Mechanical Piping (SMP) Specialist to join our project team delivering the world-class Oyu Tolgoi underground mine in Mongolia. This is a key role within the Owner's team with the responsibility for the safe and timely delivery of the cave Production Infrastructure.

The SMP Specialist is accountable for providing supervision and technical expertise to the EL/HL construction team and is responsible for supporting the coordination of contractor teams to deliver relevant scopes of work in accordance with the project plans and specifications and to achieve effective performance in accordance with detailed projects and schedules within the designated time frame and budget

In addition, they will also be responsible for the training and upskilling of the National SMP Supervisors for future construction works. Expected time frame for transition to occur in 2-3yrs once on boarded.

Working within the Extraction Level/Haulage Level Construction integrated delivery team (mining and construction disciplines) you will be:
  • Ensure compliance to the OT HSE and Quality Management Plans
  • Show outstanding leadership and commitment to HSE and Quality
  • Ensure all personnel and contractor staff participate in the identification and elimination of hazards
  • Immediately report and assist with the investigation of all incidents
  • Ability to manage and supervise across multiple work fronts and multiple disciplines including subcontractor supervision
  • Assist the project schedulers with the sequencing of scope activities and set logic to the schedule
  • Execute field works to plan, adjusting resourcing in line with schedule and milestone priorities
  • Adhere to project construction schedule and ensure accuracy for both productive and non-productive time
  • Analyse schedule to determine critical path activities and communicate priorities to the project team
  • Ensure critical system handovers outside normal hours are planned and communicated to maximise schedule opportunities
  • Liaise with the project controls personnel to provide accurate daily updates of progress
  • Monitor and ensure work is completed within the controls defined in all work packs
  • Manage and report all changes outside of the defined scope of works
  • Complete final work pack sign-off verifying completion of the defined scope of work
  • Investigate and assist with the management of design and construction deficiencies
  • Review and manage performance of all contractors
  • Monitor and audit all construction progress including MDR and ITP compliance
  • Provide continuous guidance to construction team members
  • Reviewing design drawings, reports, specifications and tender documents for underground pavement/concreting works, demonstrating an understanding of pavement design methodologies and construction methods.
  • Working closely with the on-site batch plant operator and other relevant businesses/providers to source optimal materials for the pavement and undertake trial mixes to ensure consistent delivery of quality product that meets specifications
  • Owners team point of contact for all aspects of pavement production facility related engineering, technical and operational design.
  • Establishing a project quality system and ensure it is applied during pavement construction life cycle including auditing all aspects of the process, including all the laboratory and field testing, acceptance of used materials, checking and accepting all remedial and corrective measures.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have the following:
  • Trade Qualification
  • At least 08 years of experience in managing the execution underground construction projects with delivery of key SMP Packages, to the project's quality and performance requirements;
  • Experienced in pre-commissioning and commissioning of SMP related systems
  • Experienced in dealing with packages related to material handling systems
  • Solid foundation in piping construction and installations especially in hard to access areas
  • Outstanding commitment to HSE and Quality
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an integrated delivery team;
  • Well-developed contract management skills and commercial acumen;
  • An ability to work autonomously within a highly complex project delivery environment;
  • Experience working in developing countries with exposure in coaching and facilitating skills transfer to nationals

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Engineering qualification with focus in mechanical engineering

Where you will be working

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20 year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
