About the role

We are looking for a Principal Advisor Technical Capability to drive group assurance and productivity improvements through Technical Excellence. This role will form the 'engine room' of the Technical Excellence program, and has the opportunity to make a very significant contribution to the management of technical risks and achievement of the Group Productivity targets.

The Growth & Innovation group operates through the entire life cycle of Rio Tinto's mines and assets, creating value through exploration, project development and technical excellence. Working in close partnership with all product groups, it focuses on finding safer, smarter and more efficient ways to manage resources and operations.

This role is a great opportunity to perform as a catalyst for change, driving the work required to deliver a successful outcome for the technical excellence program. Technical Excellence is a major Group-wide change and improvement initiative. Reporting to the General Manager Technical Capability, you will be:
  • Responsible for the design and project management of several key technical excellence transformation initiatives. In particular
    • Design and execution of various capability assessment programs, principally associated with the processing disciplines (eg process engineering, process control, process safety etc)
    • Design and implementation of a number of initiatives designed to create tightly connected, highly collaborative communities of technical practice
    • Responsible for the definition of technical capability development programs to address identified gaps
    • Supporting the development of systems to monitor and respond to capability gaps in the first level of technical assurance at Rio Tinto assets

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification
  • Extensive experience in large, complex organisations with either a global or a large regional spread.
  • Engineering background would be key, processing background.
  • Previous experience leading large, complex change and transformation programs.
  • Strong influencing skills, including at the senior management level
  • Ability to manage third parties over complex multi-year programs and/or major initiatives
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain productive internal and external networks at the senior level
  • Ability to build robust business-focused relationships and influence others to achieve outcomes

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Previous exposure to multiple Rio Tinto business units and functions either as an employee or via another channel
  • Ability to communicate fluently in both English and French
