About the role

The HSE Lead Underground will provide expert HSE guidance and review of the Mine D&C works and ensuring HSE risks associated with the works are identified and either, eliminated or, reduced to as low as reasonably practicable.

Reporting to the HSE Manager, you will be responsible to:

  • Provide HSE leadership and coaching to the Mine D&C Contractor on Rio Tinto safety culture and expectations
  • Work closely with the Mine D&C Contractor to ensure relevant Rio Tinto HSE requirements
  • (standards/programs/initiatives) are available and understood.


  • Become familiar with Serbian legal requirements and ensure these are being met by the Mine D&C
  • Provide HSEC input into Mine D&C scopes
  • Review Contractor deliverables ensuring full incorporation of Rio Tinto requirements
  • Ensure HSE execution plans are aligned with the project schedule
  • Work closely with the Project Management Contractor (PMC) ensuring the needs of the Mine D&C are integrated into the Site-wide HSEC MS


  • Ensure the Mine D&C meets the requirements of the Site-wide HSEC MS
  • Monitor the Mine D&C HSE resources, ensuring they are adequate for managing the work
  • Participate in HSEC-i-Design; HSEC-i-Construction and Risk workshops
  • Work closely with other HSE personnel on the project ensuring alignment of approaches
  • Provide timely advice on HSEC matters and issues


  • Be a natural champion of the zero harm approach and the culture-by-design program, Slozno
  • Analyze data / information converting this to inform management decisions
  • Develop risk based HS strategies and plan for implementation
  • Facilitate a quality risk assessment if required
  • Lead a quality incident investigation if required


  • Plan and executing a quality internal audit if require


About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Experience Shaft development and underground mining is essential
  • Working with Contractors and advising / guiding / coaching them on HSE matters is essential


  • Proven experience in building positive working relationships
  • Proven experience in working with others to achieve better HSE outcomes
  • Excellent understanding and working knowledge of RT HSE Standards
  • Experience in shaft sinking and/or underground mining
  • Strong language and communication skills.


  • Demonstrated experience in solving challenging technical problems.
  • Ability to approach problems innovatively and laterally
  • Data analysis; Incident investigation and risk assessment skills


It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Minimum 5 years relevant Rio Tinto experience is desirable


  • Experience working on development projects is desirable


Where you will be working

The Jadar project is a greenfield Underground mine and process plant development located approximately 40km south-east of Loznica, Serbia. An underground mine, comprising of a production shaft, exhaust shaft, development levels, access to production stopes, mobile mining equipment and associated infrastructure. The process plant is designed to produce boric acid, lithium carbonate and sodium sulfate.

Jadar project commenced the feasibility study in Aug 2020. The project business strategy is to develop Jadar as a core, Tier 1 asset with synergies with Rio Tinto Business, enabling a green future and creating value for both Rio Tinto and Serbia. The project execution goal is to derive maximum value from Jadar for its stakeholders, while also delivering on the promised outcomes.

The Jadar Project is a world-class lithium-borate deposit discovered by Rio Tinto in 2004. Jadar is a unique deposit near the town of Loznica, Serbia. It contains Jadarite - a new lithium sodium borosilicate mineral. Jadar is the only place in the world where this mineral can be found. Jadar has been ranked as one of the largest lithium deposits in the world with a potential to supply a significant amount of the global demand for lithium and boric acid. If developed, Jadar will be a modern underground mine with efficient processing and shipping facilities.
