Superintendent Health and Safety Winu Project
  • Unique opportunity to join a ground-breaking project for Rio Tinto in Western Australia
  • High profile role with license to engage across the business model and with senior leaders

Rio Tinto is looking to the Winu Project to break the mould of greenfield project development within the company. Winu is a copper-gold deposit which is being developed in a staged approach applying minimum viable project (MVP) concepts taken from the technology start-up industry to really challenge the traditional way in which a greenfield mining project is developed and operated.

The Winu Operational Readiness (OR) Team is charged with identifying and developing a fit for purpose operation to suit both the Winu Stage 1 MVP operation and establish the foundations for an eventual, larger Stage 2 operation.

An exciting opportunity now exists for a Superintendent Health and Safety (H&S) to join the Winu Operational Readiness team.

About the role

We are looking for a Superintendent Health and Safety to provide dedicated health and safety support for a dynamic project and diverse stakeholder group at Winu. The role will require FIFO travel to the Winu site; the roster will initially be 8/6 and then transition to site travel on an as needed basis.

The role is critical to transitioning H&S responsibilities from Exploration to Resource Development, including development and implementation of H&S systems, culture, standards, procedures and assurance. The successful candidate will effectively influence and align contractor and employee routines and practices while driving operational discipline through standardisation, assurance, reporting and supporting leaders to operationalise a H&S Management System to deliver the health and safety strategy.
  • Provide H&S advice in project designs and controls
  • Lead a small team of HSE Advisors, medical contractors and an Emergency Response Team
  • Develop a strong health & safety culture across employee and contractor teams, including Leadership in the Field routines
  • Support the development and delivery of health and safety systems, plans, assurance and reporting, including incident and investigation reporting
  • Collaborate with regional health and hygiene teams
  • Actively engage contractor partners and Rio Tinto Projects to support safe planning and delivery of projects in alignment with the Rio Tinto Health and Safety Management System

What you will bring
  • Tertiary qualification in health, safety, engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively coaching and mentoring teams and contractors
  • H&S professional or passionate operational leader with history of strong health and safety performance
  • Experience with emergency response teams and training within the resources sector
  • Knowledge of statutory health & safety requirements; knowledge of Rio Tinto standards and Safety Maturity Model is beneficial
  • Advanced communication, influencing and engagement skills

What we offer
Joining the Winu team at this early stage offers the opportunity to be part of the small team that will define and shape what Winu looks like in the future. You will have the opportunity, and the license, to challenge the traditional approach to mining and put your personal stamp on an operation which will shape the way Rio Tinto develops and operates mines in the future.
