We are looking for a Senior Corporate Counsel, Copper and Diamonds working closely with the Copper and Diamonds General Counsel and Copper and Diamonds product group supporting all legal matters for existing assets and any other new business. A specific area of focus will be the Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia. The OT project is a complex and strategically important project to Rio Tinto and requires significant legal support in terms of JV governance, public disclosure, disputes and international arbitration, project financing, government negotiations and sovereign risk mitigation.

Reporting to the General Counsel Copper & Diamonds and working in a challenging and exciting environment, within the legal department, you will be:
  • Providing advice across a broad remit of legal issues including commercial contracts, M&A and litigation as well as strategic support to the Copper and Diamonds product group
  • Structuring and advising on complex multi-stakeholder negotiations from construction to closure
  • Managing the business' major legal and commercial risks
  • Ensuring adherence to the highest standards of compliance in order to build and protect Rio Tinto's reputation
  • Providing strategic guidance beyond legal advice to support a complex project with various interrelated stakeholders

What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Strong experience in non-OECD jurisdictions and dealings with complex Government and multi-stakeholder issues
  • Experience supporting complex negotiations and transactions
  • Strong corporate/commercial experience, including exposure to complex contracts, M&A and joint ventures as well as managing litigation/arbitration and an understanding of project financing
  • Accustomed to operating in an international business
  • Strong technical and analytical skills alongside a proven track record of formulating and offering creative solutions to commercial problems
  • Experience of managing relationships with external advisers and ensuring that a cost-effective service is delivered
  • Strong cross-cultural awareness and ability to quickly adapt to the situation and have a flexible style for an appropriate audience amidst uncertainty and competing interests
  • Commercial & ethical judgement and the willingness & confidence to exercise it
  • Works seamlessly across organisational and geographic boundaries in pursuit of broader corporate goals. Strong relationship-builder and a collaborative colleague who builds effective working relationships at all levels across the business
