We are seeking a Specialist Government Approvals to assist with obtaining approvals under key State legislation. Working across the Rio Tinto Iron Ore business unit, made up of 16 integrated mining operations, you will have the opportunity to support brownfield and greenfield growth strategies through soliciting key approvals.

This role is a great opportunity for enthusiastic and proactive individuals who possesses the ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain flexibility to adapt to changing business conditions and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Superintendent Government Approvals, you will:
  • Obtaining approvals under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, Mining Act 1978 and Rights in Water Irrigation Act 1914
  • Work closely with the Environmental Approvals team to monitor and track progress of approvals
  • Provide specialist advice on Government Approvals issues and requirements to GM / Manager level stakeholders within the Iron Ore division
  • Interact with Government Agencies and subject matter experts
  • Work with a close-knit team who are collaborative and supportive and emulate the Rio Tinto values

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • A Tertiary qualification in an environmental discipline or a related field
  • Understanding of Part V of the Environmental Protection Act and Mining Act
  • The skills to communicate and consult effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent technical writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to interpret and problem solve complex issues
  • Strategic, forward thinking competencies and demonstrated ability to deliver government approvals
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to quickly develop positive relationships with stakeholders
  • Proficient time management skills and ability to prioritise complex tasks
  • Experience using ArcGIS software and Microsoft applications
  • The ability to work in a team environment
