About the role

We are looking for a Principal Advisor Digital Transformation to play a leading role in helping us define and achieve the Oyu Tolgoi Underground Digital Vision. This role is to build a digital business and establish the capability needed to deliver digital and data analytics projects and to create a passionate and data obsessed digital team within Underground Mining.

Working 5 days on/ 2 days off based in Ulaanbaatar city residential or 4 weeks on/ 2 weeks off international FIFO arrangement options. Reporting to the Manager Underground Technology within the Underground Mining team, you will:
  • Guide the creation of our digital business as "Product Manager" for the Underground Mining Digital Platform.
  • Lead "fusion teams" - highly collaborative cross functional teams of analysts, data engineers, systems engineers, data scientists and third-party technology companies combined with end-users (operators, maintainers, supervisors, leaders, engineers) to deliver digital products that change decisions and improve business results.
  • Establish partnerships that drive business value priorities, and pioneer technology solutions that will provide value at velocity.
  • Build knowledge, understanding and expertise in our data and software development platforms within the UG Mining team.
  • Define the path and journey (roadmap) to digital transformation and gain support from senior stakeholders on the value of digital technology in mining.
  • Identify and scope potential projects working from the decision backwards, investigate the problem to be solved, the decision to be changed, the data and systems that underpin the business and then architect, design and deliver products that deliver the objective
  • Perform exploratory data analytics on business processes and operational outcomes in support of project scoping and shaping.
  • Solve complex and challenging problems by working closely with operators, maintainers, engineers and other subject-matter-experts.
  • Learn and apply agile and DevOps methodologies in the delivery of digital products, including end-to-end program management, strategy, budget, execution, risk management, and team leadership.
  • Work to establish the roadmap, roles, capabilities, skills and culture required for the success of a digital underground mining organisation.
  • Develop collaborative working relationships with various Rio Tinto IS&T and Product Group digital teams and partners, to gain broader business context and to facilitate collaborative change.
  • Play a key role in helping set up and advise on digital projects within other Underground Mining and wider Oyu Tolgoi teams.

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline is preferred, but progressive industry experience will be considered

  • Have customers at heart, continuously finding better ways to build a digital future with them and championing user centric design approaches for them.

It will be beneficial if you have:
  • Understanding of one or more of the following technologies in some detail: AI/ML, DevOps toolchains, Cloud Native software development, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Mobile, Big Data & Analytics
  • Experience in working with start-ups or innovation lab type environments.
  • Have experience and knowledge of design thinking and understanding customer journeys.
  • Have thorough understanding of SCRUM practices with a pragmatic approach to applying AGILE best practice
  • Have a proven track record of leading, designing and delivering complex, large scale organizational transformation initiatives and cultural change, preferably across oil and gas, metals and mining organizations.

Where you'll be working

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
