About the role

We are looking for a Manager- Global Trade to help us lead the Company's trade compliance program, set the strategic priorities and advise on trade compliance and export controls issues globally. You will be responsible for ensuring that the import and export of products comply with applicable laws and regulations, including tariff classification, country of origin, customs valuation, free trade agreements, antidumping and countervailing duties, reconciliation, CTPAT, export controls, and licensing requirements. The primary focus of the customs-related work will be USA and Canada but will also include other parts of the world where Rio Tinto has operations, such as Australia.

The Manager- Global Trade will be working in a collaborative environment and will:
  • Advise on trade agreements/export controls globally
  • Maintain and evaluate compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including overseeing risk assessments to identify compliance gaps and supervising implementation corrective actions and procedures
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries from relevant government agencies
  • Maintain expertise of current import and export laws and regulations affecting the Company and communicates to business leadership any changes that affect the Company
  • Ensure proper records are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulations
  • Advise on the proper customs valuation of imported merchandise, including oversight of annual U.S. customs reconciliations
  • Manage customs broker and trade-related consultant engagements
  • Act as an initial escalation point for daily trade-related operational challenges
  • Liaise with and coordinate internal departments/stakeholders, including Sales & Marketing, Logistics, Legal, Corporate Affairs, Tax and Compliance, in connection with trade-related issues and initiatives

What you'll bring
  • Expert knowledge of applicable import and export control laws and regulations is a MUST
  • Proven knowledge and experience advising on trade agreements/export controls and customs compliance, and undertaking customs projects
  • Experience using global trade management software.
  • Experience with audits and disclosure practicesfor Global Trade.
  • Experience with international customs compliance
  • Ability to multitask (e.g., projects, tasks, activities, among others)
  • It would be beneficial if you are a Licensed Customs Broker
  • You will be working remotely until it is approved to return to the office in Chicago.
