About the Simandou Project

The Simandou Iron Ore Mine Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. The deposit is a world-class, large-scale high-quality hematite deposit and represents one of the largest known iron ore reserves in the world.

The project consists of a mine located in the mountainous South-East of Guinea connected by a 650 km railway to transport ore to a port facility to be constructed at the coast near Conakry for export. Much of the Simandou iron ore is expected to be shipped to China for steel production.

The project is being developed by Simfer, which comprises a joint venture between Rio Tinto, Chinalco (Aluminum Corporation of China) and the Government of Guinea. Rio Tinto is working with the Government of Guinea and Chinalco to define a development pathway to realise value from this world-class iron ore deposit.
