We are currently looking for an Engineer Tailings and Dams to join our Asset Management & Engineering Services (AMES) team. Working within a close-knit internal network of tailings professionals and industry experts, you will be responsible for providing technical and operational support to project and site teams ensuring the safe and efficient operation of tailings and water storage facilities. You will collaborate with site leadership teams to ensure tailings storage facility integrity is maintained and the operations of tailings storage facilities is in accordance with the design intent and operational plan.
This role is a great opportunity to contribute to the successful stewardship of a significant portfolio of tailings and water storage facilities and work across a large business whilst extending your professional development and experience.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Rio Tinto operates the world's largest integrated portfolio of iron ore assets with industry-leading margins. This position will be working on a FIFO 5/2; 4/3 roster from Perth to our operating sites within the Pilbara.

Reporting to the Superintendent Operations Tailings & Dams, you will:
- Undertake short and long term planning for tailings storage facilities and dams
- Ensure effective inspection and monitoring of tailings storage facilities and dams and report on the status of tailings and dams assets
- Develop and own the Operational Maintenance and Surveillance manual for assigned tailings storage facilities
- Lead the implementation of management of change for tailings storage facilities and dams
- Provide first party assurance of tailings and water storage facilities
- Lead or facilitate risk assessments and provide ongoing risk management
- Partner with project and design teams for expansions or new facilities and provide quality assurance to construction of expansions or new facilities
- Provide day to day leadership of the Engineer of Record for operational matters
- Provide governance against internal and external standards across the business
What you will bring
- Bachelor of engineering (Civil) or engineering geology degree
- Previous professional experience with design, construction and/or operation of tailings storage facilities and dams
- Demonstrated ability to consistently achieve safety and operational outcomes and delivery of targets
- Strong stakeholder engagement and management skills
- Excellent communication skills
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- A strong understanding of dam safety monitoring equipment and interpretation of data
- Awareness of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and national/international guidelines (ANCOLD, ICOLD, MAC, CDA, USBR)
- Experience in supervising the construction of tailings storage facilities and/or dams
- Experience in risk assessment and risk management principles
