About the role

All progress begins with pioneers. At Rio Tinto, it begins with you.

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Technical & Strategic Mine Planning team in building one of the world's most exciting underground mining projects, Oyu Tolgoi.

You will be responsible for managing the design, planning and co-ordination of geotechnical and geological work for both medium range project delivery and long-range cave startup and operation.

Reporting to the Geotechnical Superintendent and working in professional global team, you will be:
  • Planning & managing the medium to long range Orebody Knowledge scope and deliverables.

  • Collaborating with multiple stakeholders across a number of levels and disciplines.
  • Supporting cave draw strategy formulation and analytics.
  • Performing geotechnical numerical modelling to investigate the stability implications of the draw strategy.
  • Monitor cave propagation and adjusting the draw rate to avoid air blast risk.
  • Developing & maintaining geotechnical (domain) block models, including existing/validated and predicted/forecasted rockmass models.
  • Designing & scheduling geotechnical and cave monitoring systems

As travel restrictions ease, this role requires a moderate level of international travel from Brisbane to site. Typical frequency is approximately 5 trips per year at 2 weeks per trip.

What you will bring
  • A degree qualification in engineering, specialising in rock mechanics, ground support designs or relevant discipline;
  • Underground practical geotechnical experience with significant experience in block cave mining techniques and terminology
  • High level of competence in Flac 3D and Rocscience suites or ability to learn
  • Familiarity with Deswik, Vulcan, and standard Microsoft Office suite tools
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety

What we offer
  • A safety-focused and inclusive working environment
  • A competitive salary package with annual cash incentive awards (STIP)
  • Access to top tier family-friendly health and medical programs
  • Excellent retirement plan
  • A comprehensive leave policy that covers all moments that matter in life (vacation/annual, paid parental leave, short term sick leave, paid holidays)
  • Ongoing individual wellbeing support for you and your family for personal and professional matters
  • Generous Rio Tinto employee share program
