The Opportunity

We are looking for a Geologist to be responsible for collecting geological and geotechnical data by mapping and sampling the pit cut advances and updating the applicable geologic models.

At Rio Tinto we have operations across the globe including a range of open pit and underground mines that supply copper and diamonds. Our copper operations supply products in China, Japan and the US which plays an important role in almost every home, office and vehicle. We are also one of the world's leading diamond producers and the largest producer of natural colored diamonds.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity to participate in work critical to the Bingham Canyon Mine and its future expansions in terms of resource knowledge through the optimization of geologic and geotechnical models. Reporting to the Superintendent - Geotechnical, you will be:
  • Working in a team-based environment to advance the geologic knowledge of Bingham Canyon Mine resources through geological pit mapping
  • Collating, interpreting, and transferring digital geologic data for use in Mine Technical Services planning
  • Assisting in yearly geological map updates
  • Interacting with Rio Tinto personnel and external consultants for interpretation of geology and geologic information
  • Contributing to special projects in relation to reactive ground support, rock crushing, sampling, drilling supervision, generation of geologic cross sections, road base and stemming quality, etc.
  • Responsible for Quality Assurance / Quality Control in relation to collection of geological and geotechnical data

What you will need for this role

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Geology or a related field
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience in geologic data collection related to rock types, structures, alteration, mineralogy, etc.

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • A Master's Degree in Geology or a related field
  • 1-3 years of prior basic geological work including mapping
  • Competency using MineSight or other geologic modeling software, AutoCAD, geographic information software, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience in open pit mining environment specifically in porphyry-Cu geology setting
