About the role

We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer (Power Systems) to design and implement sustainable electrical power distribution projects as an integral part of the engineering team. Role will be responsible to utilize extensive knowledge and experience to lead the design in capital projects at an industrial environment. Role occasionally contributes to reviewing and witnessing of testing and commissioning activities as well as trouble shooting of critical assets.

The role is based in Labrador City, NL.

Reporting to the Superintendent and working in a collaborative community within the Team, the Electrical Power Systems Engineer's:

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee the engineering design and commissioning of industrial electrical power systems.
  • Application, design, configuration, and commissioning of electrical equipment
  • Lead capital projects development including feasibility studies, project scope definitions, capital cost estimates, preliminary and detailed engineering designs.
  • Performs electrical power system studies, protection and control systems design and settings.
  • Reviews design deliverables and develops engineering scope of work document
  • Determines appropriate design deliverables based on project complexity
  • Leads trouble shooting of electrical power distribution systems and equipment
  • Improves and upgrades existing assets and applies complex problem-solving techniques;
  • Contributes to successful project scoping and development by participating in the resolution of issues such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of standard materials, and complex coordination requirements;Holds a key understanding of the project lifecycle, facility lifecycle and the engineering process;
  • Coordinates engineering activities for the defined area of responsibility for the full project life cycle; and
  • Performing site investigations and field reviews;
  • Preparing technical electrical specifications and in house electrical standards;

Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, low and medium voltage distribution design, and protection & relaying design. 600 Volts, 4160 Volts, 12kV, 46kV distribution systems
  • Performs calculations and studies in load flow, short circuit, motor starting, protection relay settings, electrical coordination, grounding, equipment sizing, arc flash ratings.
  • Experience in grounding grid design and lightning protection.
  • Experience in design applications of Variable Speed Drives, Motor Control Centers, industrial motors, power factor correction, applications to industrial electrical equipment, direct on-line starters, soft starters
  • Experience configuring and setting microprocessor relays is preferable
  • Knowledge of relay communications network and protocols such as IEC 61850
  • Generator sizing calculations and controls, load sharing and shedding principles
  • Review and development of control diagrams, wiring diagrams
  • In depth knowledge of MCC, and LV & MV Switchgear specifications and design
  • Substations design experience
  • SCADA experience
  • Overhead and underground distribution lines

Qualifications you will need for this role
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering - Electrical, Power Systems background;
  • P.Eng. Designation
  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant design experience;
  • Preferably experience working at an engineering firm
  • Experience working on industrial and/or utilities projects
  • Strong knowledge of power analysis software; preferably ETAP;
  • English is required, French would be considered an asset
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently with little direction and within a team environment;
  • Strong safety focus;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to forecast, analyze and work under pressure;
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Possess strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
