About the role

We are looking for a Principal engineer - Studies to lead growth studies such as mine life extensions, processing of new products and/or production improvements as well as investigation of new technologies throughout the value stream a Kennecott.

This role requires coordination of multi-disciplinary teams to produce studies, management of stakeholders across the value stream and Rio Tinto, and facilitation of independent project reviews. The role will support and report through the Projects and Engineering team located at the Daybreak offices in South Jordan, UT.

This role is a great opportunity to be involved in the planning and delivery of projects from initiation to completion, and focused on achieving objectives through managing resources, budgets, changes, and risks. Projects may be capital or expense projects, functional or cross-functional projects or related to broad business improvement initiatives. You will be:
  • Leading, planning and coordinating the study or implementation stages of projects, including the management of all functional areas
  • Responsible for resourcing, contract management, progress reporting and people management
  • Accountable for safely and successfully delivering the project and business case by ensuring the results meet technical, quality, cost and schedule requirements as per the lifecycle stages
  • Planning relevant safety requirements into all activities, tasks and projects based on assessed hazards, identified critical risks and mitigating actions
  • Ensuring proper project governance and stage gate approvals
  • Applying technical/professional knowledge to solve complex problems and recommend solutions and contributing to process improvements

What you'll bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • College degree in mining, processing, civil or mechanical engineering, or other relevant related technical field.
  • 10 years or more of progressively responsible experience in project management experience in heavy industry.
  • Experience with computer system applications, including Word, Excel, MS Project.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill.

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Project management certification or advanced project management training.
  • Broad understanding of program & project management, project controls, business improvement, contract management, risk management & change management
  • Knowledge of Project based software tools and systems

Where you'll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the tops producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production. This position will be based in the Rio Tinto offices in Daybreak.
