The Technology Development team in Group Technical - Services and Delivery works across a broad range of unique mining technologies that include machine automation projects such as the Autonomous Drilling System, real-time data platforms and 3D visualisation systems.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join an established development team tasked with the ongoing development of our Data Platforms. The role shall report to the Principal Advisor Data Platforms, and shall undertake duties including:
  • Works with Principal Advisor Data Platforms to provide support in maintaining and evolving the existing automation data platforms (i.e. Mine Automation System (MAS)) so that Rio Tinto's existing high value use cases are sustained and the platform continues to support the research and development conducted by SM&T and S&D
  • Works in a Linux environment ingesting, adding value and exporting many disparate sources and sinks of real-time operational data across a mixture of cloud, hybrid and baremetal environments
  • Works with Principal Advisor Data Platforms to provide support in evolving MAS so that it becomes more integrated with Rio Tinto Data Platforms as the architecture for the Rio Tinto Digital Integrated Mine is determined and established
  • Assist with end user requirements to ensure they are comprehensive, analysed and future-proofed to drive business growth
  • Assist with data ingestion, storage, processing, and analyses of mass data and provide guidance around Data Platforms and actionable steps to improve the quality of technology development and deployment
  • Coordinates solution architect, data engineers, and data scientists to develop data pipelines that extract, transforms and loads data, whilst ensuring security and data privacy as part of technology product development
  • Assist with product roadmap refinement and provide technical direction to enhance product features that inform the solution architecture - in alignment to customer (Product Group) requirements
  • Effectively communicating with Technical Lead, Product Owner, other product development team members, customers and other key stakeholders
  • Works with Principal Advisor Data Platforms to recommend associated limitations of existing software and hardware

What you will bring to the role
  • Commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • You will have strong Python system engineering skills with bonus points if you can grok C++ and possibly Rust in future
  • Proficiency with relational databases / SQL (Postgres, SQL Server, Oracle)
  • Familiarity building and ingesting from architectural frameworks such as REST APIs, streaming pipelines, network patterns, file I/O
  • Ideally some experience with both geospatial and temporal data
  • A working understanding of container technologies
  • An understanding of deployment concepts and technologies
  • Experience with SCM, ideally with good git experience
  • A growth mindset

This role is based in Perth, Western Australia, out of our Central Park office, working Monday - Friday. We support and encourage flexible working arrangements.
