Illawarra Metallurgical Coal is a long term and leading coking coal supplier which operates two underground metallurgical coal mines, two preparation plants and a logistics chain.

About the role

Reporting to the Superintendent Process Control and Automation (PCA), the purpose of the role is to provide specialised engineering and technical support for the management and improvement of IMC process control system infrastructure and applications through planning and strategic execution of PCA strategy to ensure IMC assets are safe, reliable and optimised as per the S32 Asset Management Standards.

Other accountabilities include:

  • Conducting the performance monitoring of the IMC process control infrastructure and applications including any improvements made; generating corrective actions and executing these actions once approved
  • Supporting the Superintendent PCA in routine collaboration meetings with site and Technology teams
  • Providing input to the Superintendent PCA for the preparation and design of IMC-wide PCA processes and procedures; including panel setup and longwall move automation processes and procedures
  • Contributing technical input to the Superintendent PCA compiling and finalising the PCA Digital Road Map
  • Contributing material for and executing assigned actions from the Monthly Collaboration and Projects Meeting between PCA and IMC Technology
  • Executing approved changes against the weekly maintenance plan and supporting the mine sites in compliance with the agreed SLAs
  • Working with infrastructure and application vendors and contract partners within support contracts to ensure stable production operating platforms
  • Filing error reports, submitting tickets, and executing corrective actions issued by IMC Technology as part of resolved tickets
  • Working with Coordinator(s) and Superintendent(s) to integrate planned changes in to the 13-week Schedule and subsequent plans leading up to execution


This position will be based at our Wollongong office, located at the University of Wollongong's Innovation Campus, with as needed travel to our Appin and Dendrobium operations which are in the southern coalfields of New South Wales.

About you

  • Bachelor of Engineering - Computer, Communications, Elecrical or equivalent
  • Extensive knowledge in industrial process control and automation including PLC, SCADA, Networks, Historians and MES systems
  • Higher level systems and languages including databases (SQL), Visual Studio (.Net/C#), Management Studio (T-SQL), Microsoft SSRS, JavaScript, JSON are preferred
  • Exposure to ITIL processes and framework an advantage
  • Budget management and forecasting experience, with exposure to contractor management
  • 1SAP work management
  • Understanding of project controls, including estimation, planning/scheduling, cost control, change management, risk management and lessons learnt implementation
