The Opportunity

Reporting to the Studies Lead, the Study Principal is responsible for the planning and delivery of a mine development study in Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility within the South32 Major Projects Team.

These projects form part of a programme of mine development works at Boddington Bauxite Mine (BBM), with a focus on determining the optimum configuration, design, and delivery approach for civil and mining infrastructure. The projects will provide opportunities to continue involvement in the projects as the project's tollgate into future project phases.

There are currently two opportunities available to work on mining development projects including:
  • Hotham North Mine Development
  • Nullaga Mine Development


  • Planning, execution and delivery of the study within approved timeframes and budgets.
  • Management of engineer service providers to provide designs and project inputs to support project requirements.
  • The health, safety and environment compliance and outcomes for assigned studies.
  • Commercially relevant business cases defining investment opportunities.
  • Pro-active engagement and management of key stakeholders and internal customers.
  • Development of budgets and schedules for future project phases.

About you

  • Experience in the development and delivery of discipline engineering and project deliverables for studies of major projects (> USD 50 million) as well as exposure to project execution.
  • Sound technical knowledge and understanding of mining and materials handling.
  • Broad exposure to operating facilities and mines - bauxite mining, civil infrastructure, road train haulage exposure, will be an advantage.
  • Experience in working with diverse stakeholder groups and exposure to complex stakeholder management and environmental approvals.
  • Strong and effective communication and engagement skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, demonstrating objective & critical thinking.
  • Have a positive, flexible and dynamic approach.


  • Relevant degree (Mining/Mechanical/Civil/Process/Project Engineering, Business or related)
  • 7+ years of experience in the mining/mineral processing industry.
  • Broad exposure to operating facilities and process plants or other major industrial undertakings.
  • Experience in design engineering, study development or project delivery.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills; able to communicate at all levels in the organisation.
