About GEMCO

Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is a South32 Company, the operation is accountable for over 20% of the world's manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.

This role is a 4/3 Roster, FIFO Darwin or Cairns or can beoffered as residential on a full-time ongoing basis.

About the role

The purpose of this role is to deliver sustained excellence in GEMCO environmental performance through strong leadership, and by championing responsible environmental management practices. You will lead a highly focused, results-orientated team that delivers an environmental management framework that prevents environmental harm and meets the South32 Environment Standard. This is an opportunity to work collaboratively with South32, government and traditional owner stakeholders to ensure the sustainable development of the world-class GEMCO operation while preserving the truly unique Groote Eylandt ecosystem.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

  • Foster a culture of felt-leadership that demonstrates genuine care and concern for the well-being of self and others.
  • Delivering workplace conditions that support sustainable productivity and positive health and safety outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and service to operational and external stakeholders to ensure compliance to South32's Environmental Standard, legislative requirements and the GEMCO Mine Management Plan.
  • Manage and coordinate a suite of environmental monitoring and reporting programs including air quality and noise, surface and groundwater, energy efficiency and GHG management, waste management, rehabilitation and biodiversity monitoring.
  • Provide key strategic and technical input into key GEMCO sustaining and future development projects.
  • Support operational teams to develop and execute best-practice progressive mine rehabilitation programs and meet future closure commitments in collaboration with key regulatory and traditional owner stakeholders.
  • Develop and foster positive relationships within the local community, including the Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) and Traditional Owners on Groote Eylandt.
  • Deliver timely and accurate environmental performance updates to key internal and external stakeholders as appropriate.


About you

You'll be a great fit if you have:

  • An ability to motivate and inspire others to take accountability for the identification, assessment and management of environmental risks.
  • Strong computing skills that enable you to assess, manipulate and communicate diverse and technically complex data sets both internally and externally, not limited to environmental management, GIS and professional reporting platforms.
  • A working understanding of the mining value chain to identify and execute in alignment with sustainable development outcomes. An ability to engage cross functional teams to share best practice, ensuring technical excellence and sustainable commercial outcomes.
  • Technical knowledge of Northern Territory and Commonwealth Environmental legislation.
  • Previous experience in delivering sustained excellence in rehabilitation and closure practices.
  • Proven leadership ability to develop team capability while influencing to set direction and guide operations to meet organisational objectives.
  • Capability to build robust and constructive relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders that enable mutually beneficial outcomes.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor / Honours degree or equivalent in: Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences or other relevant Science or Engineering fields
  • Strong mining related experience preferred. Track record of practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity.
