Our Vale Base Metals Technology & Development Department is currently seeking a:

Principal Geologist, located in Sudbury, ON

The Opportunity:

The role contributes to the validation of Vale Base Metal’s Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve estimates ensuring compliancy with the corporate guidelines and standards and S-K 1300 of the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States. It participates annually in the compilation of the mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for reporting in the Vale’s Annual Report and 20F filing document and develops and maintains mineral resource and mineral reserve guidelines and standards.

It carries out technical assurance of Operations and Projects through regular reviews of mineral resource estimates and methods at all operations. In addition, the role provides technical support upon request and contributes to the continuous improvement of resource modelling and mineral resource processes and reconciliation practices.


  • Act as a Corporate Qualified Person under SEC S-K 1300 for the mineral resources and mineral reserves stated under the direct management of Vale Base Metals.
  • Reviews and audits mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates at all sulphide and laterite Operations and Projects on an annual basis.
  • Ensures the required governance is satisfied for the estimation, reporting and disclosure of Vale Base Metals mineral resources and reserves.
  • Prepares and certifies the annual Corporate MRMR Statement and provide mineral estimates for inclusion in Vale’s annual 20F filing and in PT Vale Indonesia’s annual report.
  • Identifies MRMR issues and risks at Operations and work with exploration, project and operations geology and engineering teams, to prioritize and provide technical support to systematically resolve them.
  • Provides guidance and training to the operations and project teams on resource modeling, estimation and reporting to ensure best estimates are used for earnings determination, including development of new processes to improve confidence in the estimates by area or depletion calculations.
  • Validates the compilation of the mineral resources of all operations and projects for reporting and prepare reporting documents, including technical reports.
  • Schedules, organizes and manages external MRMR audits for all operations.
  • Develops and maintains the corporate MRMR estimation and reporting standards and guidelines in compliance with best business practices, legal requirements and Vale’s corporate requirements, and annually review and update the Base Metals Guidelines.
  • Compiles, updates and communicates the Vale Base Metals consolidated mineral inventory, mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates, risks and opportunities.
  • Assists corporate office and operational departments developing a mineral resource strategy which delivers maximum value from the mineral resources and the mineral inventory. Assist in the validation of LoM plans.
  • Approves and provides input into all Vale Base Metals MRMR statements and public disclosure involving or impacting mineral reserves.
  • Provides geology and MRMR technical input and reviews at Project tollgate/maturity assessments.
  • Delivers and maintains certain Vale Base Metals resource management technical guidelines including MRMR estimation and classification, mining cut off, production reconciliation, QA/QC, block modeling etc.

  • Ideal candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in Geology or related.
  • P. .Eng, P. Geo or eligible for registration within Ontario or Recognized Professional Organization under CRIRSCO.

  • 11 – 15 years’ experience in geology, MRMR or related.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to maintain effective and engaging conversations and trust with all Project Management to become integrated within the teams.
  • Strong abilities with underground mine geology and mining methods and working experience with geostatistical software would be an asset.
  • Sensitivity to environmental requirements.
  • Good initiative, attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a multidisciplinary environment.
