The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Process Engineering Co-op, 12-15 months to join our Refinery in Port Colborne, in May 2021.

Reporting to the Senior Engineer Metallurgy, the student will hold a technical support role in the Process Technology Department. The role adds value by assisting the technical team in the areas of process monitoring, process troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and research and development. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing KPI tracking dashboards and interpreting daily and monthly process data as well as leading a continuous improvement project in one of the plants.

Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences – and that’s what makes us great!

Education & Experience:
  • Education: Currently enrolled and in good standing in a Chemical Engineering/ Process Controls program; with strong computer programming skills
  • Please include a university transcript(s) with your application
  • Preference will be given to students in 3 rd year of higher
  • Excellent Excel skills including Macros and experience with Pi ProcessBook, DataLink & Coresight would be an asset
  • Experience in a similar role would be an asset

Requirements & Accountabilities:
  • Follow Vale’s Safety Policies, Programs and Legislative Standards
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Must be obsessed with safety and risk
  • Demonstrate open and transparent dialogue in all aspects of work
  • Acquire and use practical and technical knowledge of the plant process including process flowsheets, reaction chemistry / hydrometallurgy and reagent usage
  • Develop automated systems to track and monitor process data
  • Assist with troubleshooting related to plant efficiency, product quality, throughput, and environmental issues
  • Lead process improvement projects in collaboration with Operations
  • Ability to apply basic chemical engineering knowledge (metals accounting, mass balances, reaction chemistry, etc.)
  • Data analysis skills to track, compile and interpret plant data
  • Knowledge of Overall Equipment Effectiveness principles
  • Initiative and self-motivation to learn the process and move projects forward
