Our Team:

Our corporate office, located in downtown Toronto serves as the headquarters for the global Base Metals business, providing support to all our Base Metals operations. In Mississauga, you’ll find Vale’s Base Metals Technology Development team; a group of highly trained engineers and scientists working to improve Vale’s competitive edge and support its growth strategies by coming up with safer and more environmentally responsible technology.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Safety Specialist to join our Health/Safety/Environment/Risk Base Metals team in Mississauga. This is a permanent position.

As a champion of safety management, this role will support safety programs to sustain and improve safety performance, reduce occupational safety risks to the business and address the challenges facing our organization in achieving our goal of zero harm.

This role will support the activities of the Vale Base Metals Safety team in maintaining and applying the Integrated Management System to ensure effective hazard identification and risk analysis, management of the risks using Critical Activity Requirements and emergency response management.

About You
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field is required
  • Professional Designation like (P.Eng., CRSP, CMSP, CET) or ability to become certified within 6 months
  • Support Vale Base Metals Health, Safety, and Operational Risk department in alignment with Vale’s Life Matters Most goals.
  • Support the standardization and continuous improvement in the following key aspects of the Vale Production System (VPS), Vale’s Management Model, as it applies to Occupational Safety at Vale Base Metals mining and processing operations:
    • Hazard identification and risk analysis through qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk assessments;
    • Critical activity requirements (CAR) to control the risks associated with high potential risk activities;
    • Management of change;
    • Pre-startup and shutdown safety preparation and reviews; and
    • Emergency preparedness and response.
  • Identify, develop and communicate best practices in safety management.
  • Lead the investigation of significant safety incidents, review significant incident investigation reports, and compile facts and root causes. Based on findings rising from significant incident investigation, define and develop recommendations for preventative measures to reduce the risk of future significant incidents.
  • Work with operating sites to integrate and maintain the VPS elements within operations.
  • Support centralized projects group and engineering functions to ensure compliance with the VPS system;
  • Supporting, coaching and demonstrating Leadership in the Field;
  • Build relationships with safety regulators and lead or participate in internal safety audits.
  • Be an internal safety consultant and mentor; assist Regional Safety Professionals to implement and maintain the VPS system at operating sites, monitor and report on VPS performance and key safety indicators, and support and continuously improve the effectiveness of the VPS system.

Other knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviours needed to perform this position:
  • Safety management experience at underground mining operations.
  • Understanding of operational site safety systems and programs.
  • Strong leadership, communication and influencing skills.
  • Experience with change management in large organizations.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong capability with Microsoft Office software.
  • Familiarity with Global Health and Safety regulations.
