Our open-pit mine and concentrator in Voisey’s Bay - Vale’s only fly-in/fly-out operation in Canada - produces nickel-cobalt-copper concentrate and copper concentrate. An underground expansion will see a transition to a leading edge underground mine extending the life of the mine until 2034. Our state-of the-art facility in Long Harbour is the first nickel processing plant in the world to use hydrometallurgy technology to produce Plating RoundsTM from hard rock (sulphide) concentrate, with low carbon footprint compared to traditional smelter technology. Our offices in St. John’s and Goose Bay provide support to the Newfoundland and Labrador Operations.

The Opportunity

Our Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion Project team is currently seeking a COST CONTROLLER to join our Project Team in St. John’s, NL, (currently work from home) with a Monday-Friday work schedule. This is a fixed term position.

The Cost Controller will have the responsibility for providing cost control and financial control support for the Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion Project. The incumbent will be responsible for analyzing and forecasting project costs, as well as developing, preparing and collecting cost data for monthly progress reports and overall status reports to the management team for review.

In this position, you will:
  • Create and manage detailed project information related to contractual scope and cost for submittal to the project management team;
  • Report project cost and schedule status to management team for internal reviews, as well as analyzing cost variances and recommending corrective actions for the project;
  • Support the team on ensuring the application of the Project Change Management procedures;
  • Liaise with contract managers to ensure project approval hierarchy is respected in the execution of contracts and approval of project invoices;
  • Responsible for budget management, providing budget updates and project cost flow. Prepare forecasts, cost trend reports and monitor cost and budget forecasts;
  • Create/update cost flow models for packages of responsibility and integrate into planning and contracts departments;
  • Collaborate closely with management team to ensure all project tasks are identified and resource needs are accurately estimated for the project;
  • Reviewing project scope change and change order requests for proper justification, cost impacts, and adequate budget and funding;
  • Ensure that relevant cost management procedures and reporting requirements are incorporated where appropriate on invitations to tender;
  • Work in coordination with contract administrators on contract budgets, progress payments, valuations of contract variations and compensation events, as well as contract financial close-out;
  • Ensure Vale’s policies on Budget and Cost Control are being respected and implemented during the execution of the project;
  • Review project accounting information and set up the required transfers between Vale's business units;
  • Support the management team on ensuring project’s adherence to the approved budget.


About You
  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Accounting or Business.
  • One of CA, PMP, P.Eng., CGA, CMA, or CPA designations are preferred.
  • 5+ years of cost control experience, preferably in a project environment on heavy industrial or mining projects.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering controls, cost control, project accounting and project reporting.
  • Strong ability to work in a team environment, effective communicator, and problem-solving skills. Excellent analytical skills and attention detail.
  • Continuous improvement approach to getting things done and a track record of looking for efficiencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel including familiarity with handling multi source data with pivot tables.
  • Experience working with Prism considered an asset.
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with all staff levels within the workplace.
