Our corporate office, located in downtown Toronto serves as the headquarters for the global Base Metals business, providing support to all our Base Metals operations. In Mississauga, you’ll find Vale’s Base Metals Technology Development team; a group of highly trained engineers and scientists working to improve Vale’s competitive edge and support its growth strategies by coming up with safer and more environmentally responsible technology.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Specialist, Strategy and Finance to join our Strategy and Long-term Planning team in Toronto. This is a permanent position.
  • The Senior Specialist, Economic/Finance and Strategy Evaluation is responsible for the evaluation of proposed changes to the business and custom feeds to provide the Integrated Planning Team with the information needed to make critical decisions affecting the profitability of the Company and individual business units. The incumbent participates in the strategic planning process by integrating technical expertise and financial knowledge of the overall operations and projects and incorporating this in financial models while challenging assumptions.
  • Support the Strategy and Long-Term Planning area in execution and monitoring of the Vale Base Metals business planning process through Master Plan (Strategy; Resource Development Plan), Life-of-Business Plan (LOBP), and Price Protocol processes regarding economic and financial evaluation/aspects.
  • The role will focus on the identification of economic, financial, and strategic opportunities within Vale Base Metals operations and projects that will be integrated into the overall business plan and influence the overall strategy of Vale Base Metals.
  • To lead the coordination of Vale Base Metals business planning financial and economic models and its standardization across departments within the business planning specialists and units, including but not limited to operations, finance, sales & marketing, Technology Excellence Centre (exploration, projects, MRMR, technology), Vale SA corporate, Integrated Business Planning, H&SE, and legal/taxes departments.
  • Participate in various activities that can be global in nature within the strategy group including, but not limited to consolidation of global plans, internal and external presentation support, interaction with Business Development area.
  • Key point of contact in Strategy & LT Planning regarding economic and financial evaluations across Vale Base Metals groups, including Operations, Capital Projects, Brownfield Exploration, MRMR, Integrated Business Planning process, Technical Excellence Centre, Marketing, Finance, Health Safety & Sustainability, Human Resources and Legal.
  • Collaboratively work with Business Planners and Principal Mining Engineers of Strategy & Long-Term Planning management area. Ensure alignment with Business Development professionals on governance, technical, economic/financial, and strategy to support decisions across Base Metals Business.
  • Provide financial and technical expertise, advice, and recommendations to Vale Base Metals Senior Leadership regarding strategic and long-term business decisions.
  • Drive process improvements, change management, and standardization to increase efficiency, reduce costs, improve Finance analytics, reporting and deliverables to senior management.
  • Drive alignment within Finance on agreed initiatives including definition of deliverables, priorities, resource requirements, measurements of success, and completion targets.
  • Provide direction and support to Strategy & Long-Term business planning projects as well as facilitate collection and accuracy of information of reports that are required external to Vale Base Metals (i.e., local governments, federal governments).
  • Foster a strong foundation of financial discipline and accountability within the strategic and business planning process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the annual strategic business planning economic and financial processes for the respective Vale Base Metals business units.
  • Completion of what-if value optimization analysis and development of “from-to” execution workplans.
  • Link changes in the Vale Base Metals business environment with the Global Business Plans.
  • Perform deep-dives and scenario analysis of critical business matters through the Master Plan (Strategy; Resource Development Plan), Life-of-Business Plans, Price Protocol processes.
  • Establish and maintain economic and financial processes that enable appropriate methods of analysis.
  • Participate in the assessment of options to affect the total value of the portfolio.
  • Maintain financial model and assess the financial/strategic impact of different production/cost scenarios.
  • Support elaboration and submission of the Annual Budgets.
  • Consolidate the Strategic Plan for the global Base Metals business, for review by Base Metals management and submission to the Corporate Strategy department.
  • Integrate all the individual financial models’ outputs into a single Base Metals Global model, providing senior managers and other areas with the main operational, financial, and economic figures for the Business in a consolidated view.
  • Provide analysis identifying the contribution of each individual operation to the Global Base Metals results, considering all the metrics and figures listed above.
  • Identify and suggest the necessary tools to allow the Integrated Planning department to run a proper consolidation of its operational and financial figures, running scenario analysis in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work with Business Planners to guarantee the proper standardization of the financial models and tools.
  • Act as a Gatekeeper for the internal processes, assuring quality, standardization and compliance with the internal guidelines regarding the financial analysis of the business and its individual operations.
  • Work with the Finance department to guarantee that the finance / economic standards and methodologies to measure the Business and its operations are being applied consistently by both areas.
  • Suggest, elaborate, and maintain internal guidelines and principles for Business financial evaluation and Projects financial evaluation.
  • Participate in business evaluations, as required, to support the strategic and business planning processes.
  • Play a key role in the formalization and follow up of the strategic business plan by collecting all required financial data and ensuring its accuracy.
  • Develop business cases together with business planners for change management to advance continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Compile and advise business planners about the economic and financial evaluation of critical capital projects.

About You
  • Strong Financial Planning and Business Financial evaluation knowledge
  • Experience with Corporate Strategy and knowledge of the mine and metals industry (Base Metals industry as an asset)
  • 11 to 15 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Undergraduate degree is required
  • Post-secondary degree in Engineering, Economy, Business, Finance, or related field is preferred
  • Professional training certification such as MBA, CFA, CPA, P.Eng., is preferred
  • Attention to detail
  • Advanced MS Excel
