Our Team:

With over 60 years of experience as a top nickel producer in Manitoba, the Thompson Mine and Concentrator has a strong future in northern Manitoba. Located in the heart of the northern boreal region, the Thompson Nickel Belt is still considered one of the world’s most promising resources.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Superintendent, Safety and Health - Capital Projects to join our North Atlantic Project Group team in Thompson. This is a permanent position.

The primary role of the incumbent will be to provide leadership and guidance to the field and systems safety advisors regarding technical support, training staff, coordination, development and implementation of the Project's Health, Safety, Environment and Risk Management System and to provide advice and assistance to enable the Integrated Owner's team to achieve zero harm. The incumbent will be responsible to development and implement a number of programs and plans prior to construction and commissioning. They will work closely with various functional areas to ensure they understand and follow the applicable legislative requirements, as well as Vale Programs and Rules. They will also monitor that contracted integrated team members are complying to the HSER requirements of the project, by auditing performance vs the HSER Plan for compliance, effectiveness of safety programs, policies and procedures in the field.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the project team and other stakeholders with interpretation of Vale Systems and rules, assist in communication with Plant HSER resources.
  • Field visits to site to ensure compliance to Regulations, Vale standards, and the Project HSER program.
  • Ensure coordination, field implementation and management of the specific NAPG Project(s) HSER Execution Plan for Construction and Commissioning, including related project commitments.
  • Monitor the field assurance audits for key risk controls to assess effectiveness.
  • Monitor audits of the safety activities of the contractor’s vs the safety details in the HSER program
  • Ensure proper tracking of responses, and flagging/challenging where responses are backlogged, or inappropriate
  • Coaching of individuals in the project within the principles and values behind the HomeSafe philosophy and project values.
  • Regular interaction and advice to project personnel and workplace sites
  • Assign resources for participation and/or review of investigations, for appropriate and timely response.
  • Participation in review of accuracy of project KPIs for HSER
  • Monitor the Projects MLTSD Correspondence and track project responses. Flag concerns with content or timeliness to PM owners’ team.
  • Review Health programs of the project team vs legislation for compliance, as well as follow-up to workplace concerns / exceedances
  • Ensure updating and modification of safety related documents and tools for stakeholders as required
  • Audit project compliance and readiness on emergency preparedness (training, knowledge and drills).
  • In conjunction with project management and/or project contractors, coordinate thorough investigation of all incidents and actively participate in higher risk safety incidents and coordinate audits to eliminate conditions that have potential negative environmental impacts to the project.
  • Conduct unscheduled and scheduled inspections of work areas in conjunction with project management, contractors, and employees as appropriate.


About You
  • Relevant 2–3-year College Diploma
  • CRSP or Equivalent certification is mandatory
  • 7-10 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Construction and Project experience or Mining experience is considered an asset
