Ontario Team:

Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electro cobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking an Advisor, Safety to join our Health, Safety, Environment, and Risk team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The primary role of the incumbent will be to provide technical support and training to staff to coordinate the development and implementation of the North Atlantic Project Group's Health, Safety, Environment and Risk Management System and to provide advice and assistance to enable the integrated owner's teams to achieve zero harm at the construction site. The incumbent will be responsible to assist with the development and implement several programs and plans prior to construction and commissioning. They will work closely with the integrated owner's team, to ensure they understand and follow the applicable legislative requirements, as well as Vale Programs and Rules. They will also monitor that the integrated owner's team is complying to the HSER requirements of the project, by auditing performance vs the HSER Plan for compliance, and effectiveness of safety programs, policies and procedures in the field.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the project team and other stakeholders with interpretation of Vale Systems and rules, assist in communication with Plant HSE resources
  • Field visits to site to ensure compliance to Regulations, Vale standards, and the project HSER program
  • Coordinate the field implementation and management of the specific NAPG Project Execution Plan for Construction and Commissioning, including related project commitments
  • Conduct field assurance audits for key risk controls to assess effectiveness
  • Conduct audits of the safety activities of the integrated owner's team vs the safety programs in the HSER program
  • Tracking of responses, and flagging/challenging where responses are backlogged, or inappropriate
  • Coaching of individuals in the project within the principles and values behind the Safe Production/Home Safe philosophy and project values
  • Regular interaction and advice to integrated owner's team personnel and workplace sites
  • Participation and/or review of investigations as assigned, for appropriate and timely response
  • Participation in review of accuracy of project KPIs for HSER
  • Monitor the Projects MOL Correspondence and track project responses. Flag concerns with content or timeliness to PM owners’ team
  • Review Health programs of the integrated owner's team vs legislation for compliance, as well as follow-up to workplace concerns / exceedances
  • Updating and modification of safety related documents and tools for stakeholders as required
  • Audit integrated owner's team compliance and readiness on emergency preparedness (training, knowledge and drills)
  • In conjunction with project management, integrated owner's team and/or project contractors, coordinate thorough investigation of all incidents and actively participate in higher risk safety incidents and coordinate audits to eliminate conditions that have potential negative environmental impacts to the project
  • Conduct unscheduled and scheduled inspections of work areas in conjunction with project management, contractors and employees as appropriate

About You
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in a similar role with experience in construction and project experience
  • A College diploma or undergraduate degree in a related discipline
  • CRSP or Equivalent, Underground Common Core

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge with Underground construction and project experience.
  • Knowledge of the OHS legislation
  • Excellent communication skills, analytical thinking and good leadership qualities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs Word, Excel and PowerPoint
