Our Team:

Our corporate office, located in downtown Toronto serves as the headquarters for the global Base Metals business, providing support to all our Base Metals operations. In Mississauga, you’ll find Vale’s Base Metals Technology Development team; a group of highly trained engineers and scientists working to improve Vale’s competitive edge and support its growth strategies by coming up with safer and more environmentally responsible technology.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist, Engineer – Low Carbon to join our Planning and Engineering team in Toronto. This is a permanent position.
  • Support implementing the Low Carbon agenda across Base Metals, collaborating with sites technical teams and leaders, corporate teams and third parties to achieve companies decarbonization strategic objectives and goals
  • Support engineering and operational team to ensure that low carbon initiatives are led, prioritized, and resourced
  • Collaborate with teams across the entire Vale business and the global Vale SA Climate Change teams, Iron Ore Powershift team and internally in Base Metals across Engineering, Projects, Planning, Environment, Corporate Affairs, Sustainability, Legal, Energy, Finance, Marketing, Procurement and Operational teams



Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and implement roadmaps and strategy to deliver Low Carbon objectives
  • Assist the development and coordination of routines, engagement, presentations and actions
  • Identify carbon sources, sinks and emissions to subsequently work collaboratively with the sites to implement the relevant initiatives to achieve the Low Carbon goals
  • Propose tangible metrics to measure the program success, including the level of engagement at sites, initiative leaders, and the engineering and projects teams
  • Support definition of risk management routines and controls for the Low Carbon initiative including the technology risk assessments and climate change scenarios assessment for the sites and adaptation and mitigation measures
  • Support and improve a collaboration network internally and externally, projects and technology and seek formal and informal engagement with this network to accelerate low carbon initiatives and practices.
  • Engage critical consultants and contractors who support in achieving the outcomes from the Low Carbon program.
  • Support the development of the Base Metals MAC (Marginal Abatement Cost) curves for each site, to prioritize the initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Support the Identification of upstream and downstream emissions drivers, such as key customers and suppliers who have considerable impact on the carbon footprint of our products and collaborate with procurement and sales & marketing to identify mitigating strategies.
  • Provide support for existing operations, future projects and also potential Mergers & Acquisition on assessing emissions reductions opportunities and climate change risks. Develop action plans including analysis of opportunities and risks mitigation.
  • Update the scope 3 emissions inventory and ensure that this process is imbedded within the business. Engage in the working group on the strategy for Scope 3 carbon emissions, supporting the progress of the product carbon footprint.
  • Understand and coordinate the implementation of Vale’s global Sustainability and Low Carbon policies, procedures and standard methodologies across. Propose and support development to the business standards, procedures and guidelines around the Low Carbon Program implementation.
  • Participate in the assessment of regulatory measures to curb the industry’s carbon emissions and work with Vale teams to identify institutional and regulatory risk and opportunity
  • Participate in industry forums and discussions related to the low carbon agenda, engage in collaborative initiatives and support Base Metals and Vale reputation strategy.
  • Support the communication of Low Carbon strategies and projects.
  • Help embedding low carbon elements into the Base Metals sites decision making processes, including: budgeting, R&D and Sustaining projects, key performance indicators, Strategic Initiatives, etc.
  • Lead all aspects of the process of negotiating, defining and cascading goals / targets for Base Metals Low Carbon.


About You
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Undergraduate degree is required
  • P. Eng. designation is required
  • Metallurgical Engineer/Mining Engineer is preferred
  • Master, MBA, or Post Graduate degree in related field is preferred


Other Knowledge and Skills:
  • Understanding of mining and processing technologies and flow sheets for Nickel and Copper
  • Project and Program Management experience, including financial and carbon metrics
  • Understanding of GHG emission sources, technology solutions and opportunities across industries such as Nickel and Copper
  • Sound understanding of climate change standards, guidelines and advancements in disclosure requirements
  • Other skills include facilitation and leadership, communication, planning and execution, routine management.
