Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Our Team:

The Mason is integral for employee safety and Vale’s long-term operating strategy. Members of this team work at our Smelter Complex. Together our Masons build and repair heat and corrosion resistant structures and vessels such as furnaces, tanks, and converters. Team members are also involved in the development of long-term and short-term initiatives, practices and procedures.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Mason (Refractory Mason) to join our Maintenance Department in Sudbury, Ontario.

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Mason is responsible for laying refractory brick and performing masonry work in our plant’s Converters & Furnaces maintenance and construction.

In this position, you will:
  • To cut and fit masonry materials to any form in erection and maintenance of structures involving arches, curved or angular shapes, in converters, flash furnaces, roasters, boilers, launders, etc.
  • \t
  • Performs various types of rough and finish masonry work such as laying brick, block and tile, concrete finishing, plastering, grouting, insulating, gunning castable material and plastic, etc.

  • Lay out work or assists in establishing elevations, corner points and base lines on repair and construction jobs.

  • Align with work safety policies and safety regulations.

About You

  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of industrial experience as a Refractory Mason is required.
  • \t
  • Apprenticeship program: Successful completion of a certificate of apprenticeship program that is administered by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development is preferred.

  • Experience: Completion of level 1 beginners in-school portion is required.
