Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.

Our Team

The Garson Mine Team is integral to the success of the operation in becoming a safe, predictable, and reliable producer. The Maintenance Engineer at Garson Mine will work closely with the Reliability, Maintenance Planning and Execution teams which include Supervisors and Superintendents. The Maintenance Engineer forms part of the reporting structure to the offsite Maintenance Manager and on-site Integrated Planning Superintendent.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Maintenance Engineer to join Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a permanent position.

In this role, you will be responsible for on-site technical maintenance support, engineering, screening/scoping, repair scopes of work and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives at the site(s) they support.

In this position you will:
  • Provide on-site, maintenance engineering technical support when failure symptoms have been detected, to develop the actions required to prevent a failure and have assets returned to running condition if failure occurs.
  • Conduct/coordinate engineering field assessments and/or integrity assessment to make sure the assets are running without defects and coordinate with Operations, Procurement, Maintenance, Project Engineering, OEMs as required.
  • Support operations and execution teams to conduct Continuous Improvement Projects related to operating or maintaining assets. Makes recommendations for improving the repair cycle on assets. This includes applying existing engineered solutions or Vale engineering standards
  • Conduct initial engineering screening and scoping for engineering requests at the site.
  • Support execution teams to improve productivity and repair cycle times through continuous improvement projects, research of change in technology. As well as support the maintenance management teams to ensure that work packages are executed as per design.
  • Evaluate equipment design improvements and new technologies for condition monitoring programs/initiatives.
  • Lead technical engineering support for site on significant equipment failures to assist execution teams to return equipment to operation as soon as possible and without risk
  • Provide Input for Equipment Capital Expenditures - Design for maintainability and reliability.
  • Support shutdowns as required/needed and as well as providing support to stakeholders with troubleshooting complex problems.
  • Apply value analysis (cost vs. benefit) in making maintenance decisions concerning repair, replacement, or redesign of equipment and systems.
  • Update equipment O and M plans to optimize its life-cycle strategies and improve plant performance and maintain a precision maintenance library for use in PM updates
  • Ensure WO user statuses are properly maintained throughout the lifecycle of the work order and manage backlog to ensure work orders are planned based off priority and required end date.
  • Review and promote/reject all new notifications into your work center through the group approval process and identify and escalate all critical issues that threaten the successful execution of work orders for completion by their Required End Date.
  • Monitor KPIs and actively strive towards plant targets.


About You

Education:
  • Bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Preferred registered Professional Engineer (Mechanical or Electrical) within the province of Ontario
  • Preferred Maintenance Reliability professional and or/Maintenance Management Professional designation is an asset.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 2-5 years\u2019 experience in Maintenance/Plant Engineering related roles.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience working within SAP.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in an industrial environment such as mining, utilities or construction.
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in Power Distribution, Instrumentation and Control Systems.
  • The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in CEC.
  • Although previous experience in mining or an industrial setting is considered an asset, we also appreciate that diversity of thought comes from our differences \u2013 and that\u2019s what makes us great!

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to influence without authority.
  • Takes initiative and is able to self-direct to accomplish goals with minimum supervision.
  • Software skills in MS Office products and CMMS systems (SAP)
