Job Description

Position Summary

Project Manager - Agile at Westmoreland has a primary focus on leading organizational teams through Continuous Improvement projects. Activities performed by the Project Manager include measuring, improving, and monitoring organizational processes with the aim of making them as efficient as possible. Defines, designs, and implements organizational improvement as a part of the Project Management Office strategic direction, and ensures integration and alignment, vertically and horizontally, across the organization. Defines improvement projects aligned with business strategies and priorities. Facilitates and coaches improvement teams. Establishes and maintains performance metrics to measure project success. Utilizes Agile, Scrum, Lean Six Sigma, and other change management methodologies and has appropriate levels of certification for the role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as a servant leader and internal consultant by implementing short- and long-term strategies for the organization through Agile, Scrum, Lean Six Sigma, and other practices.
  • Facilitates intrapreneurship and reduces costs, both in terms of financial, operational, and workflow inefficiencies.
  • Execute tactical and often complex projects to ensure organizational objectives are met. Contribute to the identification of projects that align with strategic objectives.
  • Drive change across the organization by analyzing existing business processes using various methods such as process flow mapping, constraint analysis, root cause analysis, risk analysis, PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), etc. to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to Operational Excellence performance metrics to ensure that organizational objectives are achieved in the areas of cost, efficiency, and quality. Ensure all financial models are properly approved by FP&A and delivered on time.
  • Lead project teams: promote Agile best practices, encourage team member participation, schedule meetings, develop project execution plans, facilitate discussions, summarize decisions and next steps, ensure team communication and deliverable development, develop implementation plans.
  • Establish measurable standards at the start of an improvement project to evaluate actual results. Regularly generate timely and detailed reports for management.
  • Collaborate with teams and directly with subject matter experts to re-engineer processes.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and direction for teams that demonstrates the proper application and interpretation of Agile principles.
  • Monitor progress of project experiments to verify desirable results.
  • Serve as a coach who coordinates workshops and team trainings, openly sharing guidance and technical expertise.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred, and three to five years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Highly analytical and experienced with project coordination, using their problem-solving skills to foresee obstacles and make strategic decisions.
  • 3 - 5+ years mining or equivalent consulting experience with strong process management and planning expertise
  • Must be fully conversant on issues and current trends as they relate to the mining industry's products and services.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Certification in project management and continuous improvement methodologies such as Project Management Professional (PMP), Agile, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent.


  • Firm understanding of Agile, Scrum, Lean Six Sigma, and other organizational improvement techniques and experience applying these.
  • Problem solving, data-driven decision making, critical thinking, creative thinking, systems thinking.
  • Extremely organized, disciplined, and committed to meeting deadlines.
  • Committed to continuous self-development in the field of project management.
  • Ability to coach and inspire team members to give their best effort and set the direction for initiatives.
  • Strong Communication & Presentation Skills (makes complex issues accessible to the business audience, clear, concise, and audience-appropriate).
  • Experience leading multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient with the use of computer and software applications including Smartsheet, Microsoft Project, Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience in process mapping.
  • Ability to manage resources both directly and via matrix management.
