Work Location Note: This position is based at the True North Mine site. Camp accommodations and meals are provided during scheduled work rotations.

Position Overview

1911 Gold Corporation is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Shaft & Hoist Foreman is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of all shaft, hoist, and shaft-related material handling systems at 1911 Gold operation. This role ensures that all shaft, hoist, and material movement activities are conducted in compliance with the Manitoba Mining Regulations, applicable standards, and company procedures.

The position serves as the primary site liaison with engineering specialists, regulatory authorities, and external vendors, while providing direct supervision and leadership to ensure site services work is completed safely, reliably, and to regulatory expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Shaft, Hoist & Regulatory Compliance (Primary Accountability)

Shaft & Hoist Systems

  • Ensure full compliance with the Manitoba Mining Regulations, company standards, and approved operating procedures for all shaft and hoisting systems
  • Oversee completion and documentation of all required daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspections, tests, and certifications for:
  • Hoists and hoist control systems.
  • Headframe structures, sheaves, hoist ropes, rope attachments, conveyances, and counterweights.
  • Braking systems, overspeed protection, interlocks, limit switches, and safety devices.
  • Verify hoist operating limits, speeds, and safety parameters remain within approved tolerances.
  • Ensure hoist rooms, control areas, and associated infrastructure are maintained in a secure, orderly, and compliant condition.
  • Review, validate, and sign off on hoist logbooks, inspection records, test results, and regulatory documentation.
  • Identify, escalate, and track non-compliances or defects, ensuring corrective actions are completed prior to return to service.
  • Shaft Infrastructure & Access

    • Ensure shaft compartments, station steel, platforms, ladders, guides, and guarding are inspected and maintained to regulatory and company standards.
    • Confirm adequate lighting, signage, barricading, and access controls are in place at all shaft stations and related work areas.
    • Ensure shaft work is planned, authorized, and conducted using approved permits, lockout/tagout procedures, and fall protection controls.
    • Coordinate shaft maintenance, inspections, and contractor activities to maintain compliance and minimize operational risk.
    • Supervise/Manage shaft personnel (Contractor or Company).

    Capital Projects and Site Infrastructure

    • Responsible for the rehabilitation of D-Shaft, Hoist, Loading Pocket, etc. Budgeting Collaborate with 1911 mgmt. for contractor selection
    • D-Shaft Rehab execution
    Provide oversight and leadership of the 26-level rock-breaker, loading pocket and headframe handling system. Budgeting Planning and scheduling Managing the contractors / vendors assigned to task Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the compressor house in coordination with site mechanical support.

    Loading Pocket, Ore & Waste Handling (Shaft Material Movement)

    Loading Pocket Operations

    • Ensure the loading pocket, chutes, gates, liners, and control systems are maintained in a safe and operable condition and compliant with the Manitoba Mining Regulations.
    • Verify loading and dumping procedures prevent overloading, uncontrolled material movement, spillage, or hang-ups.
    • Ensure barricades, interlocks, signage, and restricted access controls are installed and maintained.
    • Coordinate inspections, housekeeping, and cleanup of loading pocket and dumping areas.

    Surface Ore & Waste Bins

    • Oversee the operation and maintenance of ore and waste bins, including:
    • Structural integrity and liners.
    • Draw points, chutes, gates, and bin control systems.
  • Ensure bin levels are monitored and managed to prevent plugging, overflow, or unsafe working conditions.
  • Coordinate clearing of hang-ups using approved procedures and competent personnel only.
  • Shaft Material Movement Coordination

    • Coordinate the movement of ore, waste, and materials through the shaft to support underground production and mill requirements.
    • Liaise with Operations, Mill, and Maintenance departments to manage material flow and minimize disruptions.
    • Ensure communication protocols between hoist operators, underground crews, and surface personnel are followed.
    • Escalate material handling constraints, delays, or safety concerns promptly
    • Coordination of all shaft slinging activities.

    Engineering, Regulatory & External Liaison

    • Act as the primary site liaison with:
    • Tiley Hoist Operating System engineering and technical support teams.
    • Hoist system OEMs, service providers, and engineering consultants.
    • Manitoba Mines Inspectors and other regulatory authorities.
  • Coordinate engineering reviews, system troubleshooting, upgrades, and hoist modifications.
  • Support regulatory inspections, audits, investigations, and site visits under the Manitoba Mining Regulations.
  • Ensure inspector directives, engineering recommendations, and corrective actions are documented, tracked, and implemented.
  • Participate in regulatory correspondence, pre-inspection planning, and post-inspection follow-up.
  • SOP Development (Shaft, Hoist, Skipping, etc.)
  • Supervision & Leadership

    • Ensure personnel are trained, competent, and authorized for assigned tasks.
    • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and corrective action in accordance with company policy.
    • Develop a strategy for “owner-operator” model of shaft and hoist operations.

    Safety, Health & Environmental

    • Enforce 1911 Gold Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
    • Lead FLHAs, toolbox talks, and job safety analyses for shaft and site services work.
    • Ensure shaft evacuation procedures, emergency response readiness, and mine rescue requirements are maintained.
    • Lead or support incident, near-miss, and regulatory non-compliance investigations.

    Planning, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

    • Maintain accurate shift reports, inspection documentation, and regulatory compliance records.
    • Support short-range planning, maintenance scheduling, and shutdown coordination
    • Prepare for internal audits and external regulatory reviews.
    • Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities related to safety, compliance, and operational reliability.

    Required Experience & Skill Set

    • 7–10+ years of underground mining experience, including shaft and hoisting systems.
    • Previous experience in a Foreman or Supervisory role.
    • Strong working knowledge of shaft, hoist, and material handling requirements under the Manitoba Mining Regulations.
    • Demonstrated experience liaising with engineers, inspectors, and regulators.
    • Ability to interpret engineering documentation, procedures, and operational requirements.
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
    • Strong regulatory awareness and technical accountability.
    • Effective leadership and decision-making.
    • Clear communication with internal teams and external authorities.
    • Highly organized and detail oriented.
    • Strong commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
    • Competent with Microsoft Suite applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PPT).

    Preferred Experience & Skill Set

    • Hoist Operator Certificate or formal hoisting systems training.
    • Experience with Tiley Hoist Operating Systems.
    • Experience at remote or fly-in/fly-out mine sites.
    • Mine Rescue, First Aid, and supervisory safety training.
